BALTIMORE -- The Orioles swapped lefties prior to Saturday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, purchasing the contract of Sean Gilmartin to take Donnie Hart's roster spot.
Gilmartin entered in the fifth inning of Baltimore's 5-0 loss to Boston in Game 1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, allowing one run on three hits with two walks over 2 1/3 frames.
"Definitely good to get back out there on a big league mound for sure," said Gilmartin, who entered with 66 career Major League appearances. "Didn't really do a good job of getting ahead of hitters. I struggled with that all day long, but I was able to make pitches when I needed to and get outs."
The O's signed the 28-year-old Gilmartin in mid-July, and he had been pitching at Triple-A Norfolk, where he posted a 3.14 ERA over 14 1/3 innings. A former Mets Rule 5 Draft pick in 2015, Gilmartin has struggled to replicate that season's effort in which he compiled a 2.67 ERA in 57 1/3 innings.
Prior to Norfolk, Gilmartin logged 46 1/3 innings over 24 outings (six starts) for the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate, where he had a 4.66 ERA before being released.
