For more than two years, the Orioles have been unable to solve the Yankees whenever they rode I-95 down to Camden Yards, enduring the most lopsided losing streak to New York at Oriole Park in their history. Now that run of misfortune is approaching broader historic proportions.

The Orioles extended it with an extra-innings 6-5 loss in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader, when they squandered several run-scoring opportunities late before the Yankees scored two in the ninth off Travis Lakins Sr. The result was Baltimore’s 18th consecutive loss to the Yankees at Oriole Park, dating back to July 10, 2018.

For the Yankees, it put them one victory away from matching the longest road winning streak by any team against any one opponent, since the Dodgers won 19 straight over the Reds at Crosley Field from 1947-49.

“I’m happy with how our guys came back and we had many chances and just didn’t get it done,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “Our bullpen guys threw the ball extremely well against a tough lineup and gave us a chance to win the game.”

RBI singles by Miguel Andújar and Clint Frazier spoiled a significant comeback by the Orioles, who used Rio Ruiz and Renato Núñez homers to tie the game after the Yankees touched up spot starter Thomas Eshelman for four early runs.

Baltimore then watched a bases-loaded, one-out rally against old friend Zack Britton evaporate in the sixth, stranded a runner in scoring position against Aroldis Chapman in the seventh, and left the potential winning run on third against Jonathan Holder in the eighth. In the process, they lost Anthony Santander to an oblique injury of unclear severity.

All told, the Orioles went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in Game 1. Meanwhile, their ‘pen strung together five scoreless innings before Lakins cracked in the ninth.

“We should've won the game multiple times,” Hyde said. “We had many opportunities and just didn’t cash in.”

The Orioles have also lost 19 consecutive games overall to the Yankees dating back to 2019.

"Hats off to the guys in the bullpen for picking me up and keeping us in that game like they have all year,” said Eshelman, who was thrust into starting duties in place of Alex Cobb (injured list). “Hopefully we can get back in the second game and snap this streak.”
