Terps hoops stars to throw out first pitch at Camden

March 29th, 2025

TORONTO -- After successful 2024-25 seasons for both the University of Maryland men’s and women’s basketball teams, a quartet of Terrapins are coming to Camden Yards for the Orioles’ home opener on Monday.

Derik Queen and Julian Reese from the Terps’ men’s team and Allie Kubek and Shyanne Sellers from the women’s squad will be throwing out ceremonial first pitches ahead of the O’s matchup vs. the Red Sox. The game is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET, with ceremonies expected to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Maryland men’s and women’s teams were eliminated in the Sweet 16 round of their respective NCAA Tournaments. However, it marked the first time in school history that both programs made it that deep into March Madness in the same year.

The Terrapins’ men’s squad had a memorable second-round showing, when Queen hit a buzzer-beater to lift them to a 72-71 victory over Colorado State. Moments later, the freshman was asked on the TBS broadcast where his confidence came from in taking that winning shot.

“I’m from Baltimore. That’s why,” Queen exclaimed.

After wins over Grand Canyon University and Colorado State, the Maryland men were eliminated with an 87-71 loss to Florida on Thursday.

The Terps’ women’s team also had an incredible second-round performance in March Madness, outlasting Alabama for a 111-108 win in double overtime. That occurred after Maryland beat Norfolk State in the opening round.

The Maryland women had their season end Friday, when they lost 71-67 to South Carolina.

Queen and Sellers will also serve as “guest splashers” on Monday in the expanded Bird Bath splash zone, which now spans Sections 84 and 86 at Camden Yards. They’ll join an exclusive group of splashers that has previously featured former Orioles players (Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., Adam Jones and Ben McDonald), O’s owner David Rubenstein, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett.
