Bundy (right knee tendinitis) headed to IL
BALTIMORE -- Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with right knee tendinitis. Bundy exited Friday night’s 16-4 loss to the Rays after he allowed a season-high seven runs in the first inning.
Manager Brandon Hyde said after Saturday's Game 1 win that he expects Bundy to miss only one start. Originally, Bundy was scheduled to start Wednesday night against the Nationals.
Right-hander Tayler Scott, who was acquired from Seattle on waivers on June 25, was called up to replace Bundy.
Hyde said that Bundy, who felt the knee bothering him in the early stages of warming up for Friday’s game, has had issues with his knee before.
“I don’t know if it just flared up pregame yesterday or what happened,” Hyde said.
After Friday’s game, Bundy, who is 4-11 with a 5.28 ERA, said that he contemplated telling Hyde and pitching coach Doug Brocail that he was hurt but wanted to pitch.
“I give credit to a guy who tries to gut through stuff,” Hyde said. “Dylan’s obviously a really tough kid. I probably would like to know, but I give him a lot of credit for trying to grind through things.”
On Friday, Hyde resorted to using utility man Stevie Wilkerson to pitch the ninth inning. The Orioles had already added right-hander David Hess from Triple-A Norfolk as the 26th man for Saturday’s doubleheader.
“We’re in a tough spot,” Hyde said. “We’ve been doing this all year, it feels like … all year long we’ve been trying to just piece things together and try to finish games.”
