Davis gets therapeutic-use exemption for Adderall

HANOVER, Md. -- During a recent golf outing in Texas, Orioles slugger Chris Davis told manager Buck Showalter that he has been approved for a therapeutic-use exemption for Adderall during the 2015 season.

Davis received a 25-game suspension on Sept. 25 for failing a second test for the drug. Davis reportedly previously had an exemption, but not in 2014. He missed the entirety of the O's postseason and will be suspended through the first game of the '15 regular season.

"That's just what he told me," Showalter said during a meeting with reporters at the OriolesREACH Holiday Party for Kids on Tuesday. "He told me he was approved for it."

Showalter didn't specifically refer to the drug, but during an interview on WJZ-FM earlier in the day, he said Davis was approved for "what he got suspended for."

Due to the suspension, Davis doesn't currently take up a spot on the 40-man roster. He will still be eligible to play games during Spring Training.

Davis struggled last season after a breakout 2013 earned him a third-place finish in voting for the Baseball Writers' Association of America's American League Most Valuable Player Award. He batted .196 with a .300 on-base percentage and 26 home runs in 127 games last year after posting a .286/.370/.634 slash line with a Major League-leading 53 home runs the year before.
