Orioles Stat of the Day: August 2021
MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Orioles this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.
Aug. 31: Orioles 4, Blue Jays 2 -- Urías' lowkey WAR
The Orioles closed out August with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays sparked by Ramón Urías, whose two-run sixth-inning double gave Baltimore a lead it didn't relinquish. It was the latest in a line of quiet production from Urías, who is hitting .272 with a .773 OPS while getting an extended look. He entered play Tuesday with a 1.6 Wins Above Replacement per Fangraphs, tied with Wander Franco for third highest among AL rookies.
Aug. 30: Blue Jays 7, Orioles 3 -- Mountcastle nears record
Another day, another Ryan Mountcastle home run. The Orioles' rookie slugger smashed his 25th of the season on Monday, putting him three away from Cal Ripken Jr.'s franchise rookie record. Ripken hit 28 in 1982; Mountcastle trails only him and Eddie Murray (27 in '77) with 32 games remaining.
Aug. 29: Rays 12, Orioles 8 -- Tampa Bay blues
The Orioles don't see the Rays anymore in 2021. They can't be too upset. Baltimore became the third team in the divisional era (since 1969) to lose 18 games against one opponent, falling to 1-18 vs. Tampa Bay. The Mariners (vs. the Astros) and the Tigers (vs. the Indians), both in '19, are the only other teams to do so. The Orioles allowed 150 runs and four grand slams to the Rays, the most grand slams they've allowed to one team.
Aug. 28: Rays 4, Orioles 3 -- 8 straight home losses to Rays
The Orioles lost their eighth straight game to the Rays at Oriole Park, making it the longest single-season losing streak to one opponent in ballpark history. The previous longest streak was seven games, which happened twice, most recently from July 1-Sept. 20, 2009, against the Red Sox.
Aug. 27: Rays 6, Orioles 3 -- Hays goes long
Austin Hays smacked a home run in the fourth inning that went 103.2 mph off his bat. The two-run blast traveled 412 feet, making it the third-longest homer of his career. The two that traveled farther were both this year -- 421 feet on June 17, and 419 feet on May 14.
Aug. 26: Orioles 13, Angels 1 -- Akin notches 1st win of 2021
The Orioles earned back-to-back wins for the first time since July 30-31 by topping the Angels in Thursday afternoon's series finale at Oriole Park. Holding the Halos to one run on three hits and two walks, rookie left-hander Keegan Akin tossed a career-high seven innings and earned his first win since Sept. 16, 2020. Akin also became the first O's starter to work seven innings since John Means on May 24.
Aug. 25: Orioles 10, Angels 6 -- Ohtani hit hard
The Orioles' came from behind to snap their 19-game losing streak Wednesday, capturing a dramatic win over the Angels after hitting Shohei Ohtani hard in the early innings. The losing streak ended as the second-longest in franchise history, two behind the '88 Orioles' 21 straight. They ended it in part by homering thrice in five innings off Ohtani, getting solo shots from Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander to go along with DJ Stewart's two-run blast. They became the first team to hit multiple homers in a game off Ohtani, in 31 career starts for the right-hander.
Aug. 24: Angels 14, Orioles 8 -- Abad's scoreless outing
The Orioles had trouble keeping the Angels off the board on Tuesday. The exception was left-hander Fernando Abad, who logged 3 1/3 scoreless innings (with three strikeouts and one walk) in his longest outing since Sept. 18, 2012, as a member of the Astros. It also marked the longest scoreless outing of Abad's career, in his 388th career appearance.
Aug. 22: Braves 3, Orioles 1 -- Longest losing streak
The loss extended the O's losing streak to 18 games, making it the longest in the Majors this season. It is also the longest in MLB since 2005, when the Royals dropped 19 straight games. The Orioles are three losses away from matching their franchise and AL-record 21 straight, set in 1988.
Aug. 21: Braves 5, Orioles 4 -- Orioles come within a run
The Orioles' 17th straight defeat tied the D-backs for the longest in MLB this season. Before this season, the last team to lose at least 17 straight was the 2005 Royals, who lost 19 in a row. This was the first one-run loss of the streak, after the Orioles set a modern-day record with 16 consecutive losses by multiple runs.
Aug. 20: Braves 3, Orioles 0 -- Akin still searching
With Bruce Zimmermann now potentially sidelined for the rest of the season with a right ankle sprain, the door is open for Keegan Akin to get another extended look in the Orioles' rotation, which might be his final opportunity. Akin didn't pitch poorly on Friday but lost yet again, allowing three runs over five innings in Baltimore's loss to the Braves. The O's have now lost each of Akin's last 12 appearances (nine starts); he is 0-8 with a 9.89 ERA (48 ER/43.2 IP) in that span. All told, Baltimore is 1-17 in games Akin has pitched in this year.
Aug. 19: Rays 7, Orioles 2 -- Hit streaks happening
The Orioles have two active double-digit-game hitting streaks despite their 15-game losing streak, both extended in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field. Jorge Mateo (2-for-4, double) has now hit safely in 10 straight games, a career high. He's hit safely in 12 of 13 games since being acquired off waivers on Aug. 5. Ryan Mountcastle (1-for-4) has also hit safely in 11 straight, tied for the longest active streak in the Majors.
Aug. 18: Rays 8, Orioles 4 -- Mountcastle chasing Ripken
With its 14th straight loss Wednesday, Baltimore became the third club in the modern era (since 1901) to post two losing streaks of 14 or more games in the same season. The highlight in the loss was Ryan Mountcastle's 20th homer of the season. He became the first Orioles rookie with at least 20 homers since Trey Mancini in 2017, and eighth overall, a list that includes Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray and Curt Blefary. Ripken owns the club rookie record for homers in a season with 28.
Aug. 17: Rays 10, Orioles 0 -- Means' struggles
John Means hasn't been the same pitcher since returning from the injured list, having spent six weeks sidelined with a left shoulder issue. The latest example was Baltimore's loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday, during which Means allowed a career-high seven runs (four earned) in four-plus innings. Means' ERA was 2.05 when he hit the injured list June 5. Since returning July 20, it's 6.10 in six starts.
Aug. 16: Rays 9, Orioles 2 -- 12th consecutive loss
By dropping Monday's series opener at Tropicana Field, the Orioles lost their 12th consecutive game. They are the third American League team since 1901 with multiple losing streaks of at least 12 games in the same season, and the first since the 1996 Tigers. The O's also lost 14 straight from May 18-31.
Aug. 15: Red Sox 6, Orioles 2 -- Mateo settling in with O's
Jorge Mateo hit safely in his sixth straight game with singles in the seventh and ninth innings of the series finale. The hit streak is a career best for Mateo, whom the Orioles claimed off waivers from the Padres on Aug. 5. Since joining Baltimore, Mateo has hit safely in eight of nine games with five extra-base hits.
Aug. 14: Red Sox 16, Orioles 2 -- Back-to-back jacks
Baltimore's only runs came via back-to-back home runs, courtesy of Austin Hays and Trey Mancini. The third-inning homers marked the fifth time the Orioles have gone back-to-back this season. The last time the O's did so was on Aug. 2 vs. the Yankees, when Hays completed the feat with Cedric Mullins. With his home run Saturday, Hays extended the Orioles' homer streak to nine games.
Aug. 13: Red Sox 8, Orioles 1 -- Mullins hits in 20th straight
With a leadoff single in the first inning, Cedric Mullins extended his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games, the longest active streak in the Majors. In doing so, Mullins tied Adam Jones -- who hit safely in 20 straight in May 2012 -- for the longest hitting streak by an Oriole. Mullins’ single, which had an exit velocity of 108 mph, was the center fielder's lone hit of the night.
Aug. 12: Tigers 6, Orioles 4 -- Red-hot Mullins
The Orioles may not be winning, but Cedric Mullins is still hitting. While August has been a slog for the team, Mullins keeps chugging along at the plate. Mullins collected three hits and stole home in Thursday's series finale, extending his career-high hitting streak to 19 games. That's the longest active streak in the Majors and the longest by an O's player since Adam Jones hit in 20 straight games in 2012.
Aug. 11: Tigers 5, Orioles 2 -- Tony HRs onto Eutaw ... again!
The lone offensive highlight of the Orioles' loss to the Tigers on Wednesday came in the eighth from Anthony Santander, who homered for the fourth time in three games with a 413-foot blast off Erasmo Ramírez that landed on Eutaw Street. It was the sixth career Eutaw Street homer for Santander, pulling him into a tie for second place all-time with Luke Scott. The record is 11, held by Chris Davis. Santander is as hot as he's been all season, hitting .469 (15-for-32) with seven extra-base hits and seven RBIs in his last eight games.
Aug. 10: Tigers 9, Orioles 4 -- Tony's taters on Eutaw Street
The first of Anthony Santander's two home runs off Casey Mize on Tuesday landed on Eutaw Street, marking Santander's fifth trip to the famed promenade in his career. That ties him with Rafael Palmeiro for the third-most Eutaw Street homers of all time. Chris Davis' 11 Eutaw Street homers rank first.
Aug. 8: Rays 9, Orioles 6 -- Mullins in 20-20 club
Cedric Mullins became the Orioles' seventh player to enter the 20-20 club when he socked his 20th homer of the season. Mullins, who has 21 steals, is the first Oriole to go 20-20 since Jonathan Villar in 2019. It has happened nine times in club history, three by Brady Anderson in the 1990s. No Oriole has gone 30-30, but with 52 games to play, Mullins has a good chance to be the first.
Aug. 7: Rays 12, Orioles 3 -- Mullins keeps mashing
The Orioles' offense was held mostly in check by Baltimore native Shane McClanahan. That is, except for Cedric Mullins. Mullins' two-run homer in the third was a highlight, and it extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying his career high. Mullins is batting .361 (22-for-61 ) with seven extra-base hits and 12 runs scored during the streak, tied with the Dodgers' AJ Pollock for the longest active in MLB.
Aug. 6: Rays 10, Orioles 6 -- John Means business
Though he left with a three-run lead after five, John Means settled for a no-decision after the Rays rallied against the Orioles bullpen. Still, Means gutted through five innings without his best stuff to hold Tampa Bay to two runs (one earned), slicing his ERA to 2.79 through 16 starts. That's the lowest by an Orioles starter through 16 starts since Jeremy Guthrie in 2007 (2.42). Twenty-five Orioles have pitched to a 2.79 ERA or better over a full season (minimum 20 starts), but none since Mike Mussina in 1992.
Aug. 4: Yankees 10, Orioles 3 -- Harvey's scoreless streak
Before leaving after four innings with a right knee injury, Matt Harvey continued his strong start to the second half. In the fourth, he gave up an Anthony Rizzo solo home run, ending Harvey's scoreless streak at 21 2/3 innings. It was the longest scoreless streak by an O's starter since Kevin Gausman also logged 21 2/3 straight in 2016.
Aug. 3: Yankees 13, Orioles 1 -- Keeping Torres in the yard
Despite the loss, the O's can take some solace in the fact that they kept Yanks slugger Gleyber Torres in the yard. This is no small feat, considering Torres hit 16 homers in his first 27 career games against Baltimore, 13 of which came in '19. The Orioles haven't allowed a Torres homer in his past 19 games against them, dating back to Aug. 12, 2019.
Aug. 2: Orioles 7, Yankees 1 -- O's bash in the Bronx
The Orioles used four home runs to power their series-opening win at Yankee Stadium on Monday, with Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays, Ryan Mountcastle and Ramón Urías going deep. The four homers marked their most against the Yankees since April 6, 2018, (also four) and the team's most in a nine-inning game at Yankee Stadium since Sept. 25, 2014 (also four).
Aug. 1: Tigers 6, Orioles 2 -- Good series for Mountcastle
Standing out on a quiet offensive day for the Orioles was Ryan Mountcastle, who doubled home Austin Hays with the game's first run. It was the third RBI of the series and 58th on the season for Mountcastle, who ranks second among MLB rookies in that category and third in home runs, with 17. He's the first Orioles rookie with at least that many in both categories since Trey Mancini in 2017.
