White Sox acquire Tyler Gilbert from Philadelphia in exchange for Aaron Combs; designate Braden Shewmake for assignment

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor-league right-hander Aaron Combs. To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment.

Gilbert, 31, spent most of the 2024 season with Class AAA Lehigh Valley, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA (10 ER/40.0 IP) and 52 strikeouts in 31 relief appearances. He also pitched in six games with the Phillies, allowing three runs over 8.1 IP (3.24 ERA). Gilbert was acquired by Philadelphia from Cincinnati on May 7 in exchange for cash considerations.

Gilbert, 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, has gone 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA (47 ER/100.0 IP) in 34 games (13 starts) over parts of four seasons with Arizona (2021-23) and Philadelphia (2024). He originally was selected by the Phillies in the sixth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern California.

Combs, 23, made six appearances with Class A Kannapolis last season, recording a 0.00 ERA over 7.2 IP, after being selected in the eighth round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee.

Shewmake, 27, appeared in 29 games with the White Sox last season, batting .125 (8-64) with one home run and four RBI. He was acquired from Atlanta on November 18, 2023 as part of a six-player deal.

With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
