Notes: Injury updates, roster moves
CHICAGO -- White Sox manager Rick Renteria provided a series of injury updates for his team prior to Sunday night’s contest against Cleveland.
Left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer, on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain, will work at the team’s alternate training site in Schaumburg, Ill., while the White Sox embark on a three-game road trip in Detroit beginning Monday night at Comerica Park.
Reynaldo López, who didn’t make it through one inning in his one 2020 start against the Twins due to right shoulder soreness, threw a side session Saturday at the alternate training site. Left-handed starter Carlos Rodón (left shoulder soreness) played catch on Saturday and could be ready for a side session in a few days.
Shortstop Tim Anderson will travel with the White Sox and go through his whole routine on Monday to test a strained right groin. The team hopes he’ll be activated from the injured list in Detroit. Second baseman Nick Madrigal (left shoulder separation) was scheduled to play catch on Sunday to provide an early test for his left arm and designated hitter Edwin Encarnación (left shoulder soreness) was scheduled for more aggressive work in the cage on Sunday.
While the White Sox want their key components returned to make a strong run in this 60-game season, Renteria stressed the team won’t jeopardize any player’s future by rushing.
“Any of our guys that get into a situation that puts them behind health-wise, we’re going to be very mindful and very careful with how we proceed,” Renteria said. “I would like to be selfish, wanting their skills, but I’m also going to be selfish in protecting them, and the organization will be selfish in protecting them to make sure we do what’s right by them and the organization in the long run.
“We are trying to do our best to keep everybody on the field as much as possible to perform and do well. It behooves us in the long run to keep them as healthy as possible and do whatever it requires to make sure they are sound before they return.”
Third to first
• Outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe, who was among the White Sox Top 30 Prospects, per MLB Pipeline, was traded to the Giants for cash considerations. Basabe, 23, came to the White Sox as part of the 2016 deal sending Chris Sale to the Red Sox. The switch-hitter was designated for assignment on Aug. 4.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster. Within seven days of the transaction, the player can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
• The White Sox DFA'd right-handed pitcher Drew Anderson prior to Sunday night’s contest and recalled right-handed pitcher José Ruiz from their alternate training site. Ruiz, 25, had a 5.63 ERA over 40 appearances in 2019, while Anderson gave up six runs on four hits over 1 1/3 innings of relief work in Saturday’s loss. He threw 50 pitches in his only White Sox appearance, after being added from Schaumburg prior to the game.
He said it
“Being from Chicago and making your debut for the White Sox is what 50 percent of Chicago dreams of. The other 50 percent obviously dreams about the Cubs. But for me, this was my dream, and this was something I thought about when I was a kid.” -- right-handed reliever Zack Burdi, who debuted for the White Sox with one scoreless inning on Saturday
