Chicago will play split doubleheader on Sept. 23 and could have Jiménez, Robert then
CLEVELAND -- Inclement weather in Wednesday’s forecast for Cleveland just might have made the end of the 2021 season a little more interesting in the American League Central.
Wednesday afternoon’s series finale between the White Sox and the Indians was cancelled, setting up a split doubleheader on Sept. 23 at Progressive Field. The makeup game begins at 12:10 p.m. CT, with the originally scheduled contest for that day starting at 5:10 p.m. CT.
With this schedule adjustment, the current top two teams in the division will be playing a five-game series in Cleveland during the season’s final 10 days. The White Sox finish the regular season with two at home against the Reds and three at home against the Tigers.
This news isn’t exactly awful for the White Sox, who exited Cleveland with a 2 1/2-game lead in the division despite losing two of three to the Indians. The White Sox are hoping to have left fielder Eloy Jiménez and center fielder Luis Robert back in action by the end of September.
Jiménez, a Silver Slugger Award winner with 40-home run potential, is sidelined following surgery to repair a ruptured left pectoral tendon suffered at the end of Spring Training. Robert, a Gold Glove outfielder possessing five-tool talent, suffered a right hip flexor tear in a game against Cleveland on May 2.
“The guys we have right now have done a great job,” said White Sox first baseman José Abreu during a Wednesday morning Zoom. “The coaching staff has done a great job in helping them help us as a unit. We’ve done what we are supposed to do, do our job and do our best every day. Hopefully we are going to sustain that until Eloy and Robert join us in the future. That’s a good sign.
“Believe me, there isn’t anybody who isn’t anxious or excited to have those two guys with us. Hopefully that’s something that can be done sooner than later. I’m super excited and rooting for them to get better as soon as possible. We as a team have done a very good job just to execute and do our job.”
Lance Lynn was scheduled to throw on short rest Wednesday, after beating the Orioles on Saturday. But the postponement moved him back to the normal four-day break, and he'll take the mound to open this weekend’s home series against the Tigers on Thursday night. Dallas Keuchel, Lucas Giolito and Carlos Rodón will close out the series vs. the Tigers, with an off-day on Monday before Toronto comes to town.
In five previous doubleheaders this season, the White Sox have an 8-2 record. They swept Detroit, Baltimore and Boston, split with Kansas City and split with Cleveland on Monday.
