Anderson gets 6 games for fracas, Grifol suspended for one
CHICAGO -- White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson received a six-game suspension and manager Pedro Grifol was given a one-game suspension for their roles in a benches-clearing incident that occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against the Guardians at Progressive Field.
Anderson was in Monday night’s starting lineup against the Yankees at Guaranteed Rate Field as he appealed his suspension for fighting. Grifol had to serve his suspension Monday, with bench coach Charlie Montoyo managing the team.
“Obviously unfortunate. You never want to see anything like that unfold on a baseball field,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. “We were fortunate nobody was injured on either side. Obviously we understand the Commissioner’s Office's role in doling out discipline, and at this time we’ll support the process.
“You did see a team, on Saturday and Sunday, rally around each other. You saw individual examples of leadership, such as that from Andrew Vaughn, in particular, on the field. Michael Kopech played peacemaker in that melee. And a team that faced adversity as a unit came away with two victories that was hopefully something to build upon.”
Both Anderson and Grifol also received undisclosed fines, as did Kopech. Anderson has not spoken publicly since he fought with Guardians third baseman José Ramírez around second base after Ramírez beat out a double.
Ramírez was first critical of Anderson but apologized on Monday, adding he was trying to get in contact with Anderson to apologize personally. A right hand thrown by Ramírez caught Anderson on the chin and knocked him to the ground, but the White Sox said Monday that Anderson passed a concussion test over the weekend.
A combined eight members of the Guardians and the White Sox received discipline for their roles in the incident.
“I don’t think this was something Timmy planned or that he wanted to accomplish,” Grifol said. “It was a play at second base, a reaction by a player that led to that. It’s a divisional rival. He slid in hard, we put a hard tag and that’s what happened.”
