White Sox get southpaw help with Gilbert acquisition from Philly
CHICAGO -- The White Sox started the new year by acquiring Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies in exchange for Minor League right-hander Aaron Combs. Infielder Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment to make room for Gilbert on the 40-man roster.
Gilbert, 31, spent most of the 2024 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, finishing at 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 52 strikeouts over 40 innings pitched and 31 relief appearances. He also pitched in six games with the Phillies, allowing three runs over 8 1/3 innings. Gilbert was acquired by Philadelphia from Cincinnati on May 7 in exchange for cash considerations.
Over parts of four big league seasons with Arizona (2021-23) and the Phillies (2024), the 6-foot-3 southpaw has gone 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA. He has appeared in 34 games, with 13 being starts, although all 17 of his appearances during the last two years came from the bullpen.
Gilbert’s best season came in 2021 with the Diamondbacks, when he posted a 3.15 ERA over 40 innings. He joins the recently acquired Cam Booser along with Jared Shuster, Jake Eder, Ky Bush and Fraser Ellard as left-handed pitching options on the 40-man. Eder and Bush figure to work as starters, potentially opening the ‘25 campaign in the Minors, while Shuster also has been talked about in the past as a White Sox starting option.
Combs, 23, made six appearances with Single-A Kannapolis last season, not allowing a run over 7 2/3 innings, after being selected in the eighth round of the 2024 Draft out of the University of Tennessee. Shewmake, 27, appeared in 29 games with the White Sox last season, batting .125 with one home run and four RBIs.
He was acquired from Atlanta on November 18, 2023, as part of a six-player deal, with only Shuster and Minor Leaguer hurler Riley Gowens remaining with the White Sox from that five-player return for Aaron Bummer. Shewmake homered on the first pitch he saw as a member of the White Sox on March 30 against Detroit’s Kenta Maeda.
With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at full capacity.
