The Minnesota Twins have voided the contract of Dominican shortstop Jelfry Marte after complications with his physical, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has learned. Baseball America was first to report the news.
The Twins' concern was caused by issues with the 16-year-old's vision, sources told Baseball America. Marte's contract was worth $3 million, the third-largest deal during the current 2017-18 international signing period.
Marte, ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 3 prospect in this year's international class, is now a free agent. Baseball America reports the infielder worked out for a number of clubs in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, alongside players from the Dominican Prospect League's 2018 and '19 classes.
Marte impressed scouts with his quick hands and impressive foot speed. He also has a strong arm in addition to the defensive skills that has MLBPipeline.com projecting him as an everyday shortstop. Marte has good bat speed and an ability to make hard contact from both sides of the plate.

The Twins now have an extra $3 million available in their bonus pool to sign international free agents for the 2017-18 period ending June 15, 2018. Marte could potentially re-sign with Minnesota for a smaller bonus. If he were to do so, he would either have to be added to the team's 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 Draft, as stipulated by MLB rules relating to a player re-signing with a team after having his original contract voided.
Last October, the Astros voided a $5.15 million contract with Cuban left-hander Cionel Perez due to concerns with his physical. Perez then re-signed with Houston for $2.15 million in December and now must either be added to the Astros' 40-man roster or be subject to next month's Rule 5 Draft.
