3 hirings round out Twins' 2025 coaching staff

December 5th, 2024

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins completed the leadership group they hope will lead a turnaround of their misfortunes from the end of 2024 with the hirings of three additional coaches to manager Rocco Baldelli’s coaching staff.

On Thursday, the club announced the additions of hitting coach Rayden Sierra, assistant hitting coach Trevor Amicone and first-base/infield coach Ramon Borrego, along with the elevation of Hank Conger to serve as assistant bench and catching coach.

This latest round of moves follows the earlier hiring of Matt Borgschulte away from the Orioles to serve as hitting coach, concluding a sweeping transition across the organization that parted ways with four Major League coaches -- including the entire hitting coach group -- and general manager Thad Levine following the campaign.

Most of that transition involved internal promotions, with Borrego appointed to his first big league post following 21 seasons as a coach in the organization, including 14 as a manager -- most recently spending a four-year stint as the skipper for Double-A Wichita.

Sierra similarly earned his first Major League job following four seasons in the Minnesota organization, most recently as Minor League assistant hitting coordinator, before which he had served as hitting coach at Single-A Fort Myers.

Amicone joins Borgschulte as the only external additions to the group, moving to the Twins following five seasons with the Yankees’ organization, where he had served as the hitting coach with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since 2022. And while Borgschulte is technically an external addition following his three seasons as hitting coach with Baltimore, he’s also a familiar face, as he developed as a coach in the Twins’ Minor League organization.

Behind that all-new hitting group, the Twins hope to leave behind the issues that plagued them amid their 12-27 finish to the season, after which Baldelli spoke of the need for his offense to be more adaptable with regards to approach and situational hitting.

While the offense finished with decent numbers in aggregate, the team scored four or fewer runs in 24 of its final 30 games as it plummeted out of what once appeared to be a nearly certain playoff spot.

Baldelli had also expressed a desire to improve his infielders’ preparation -- with and in particular showing noted growing pains at second base and third base, respectively -- and addressed that need with the highly regarded Borrego, who has worked with much of the Twins’ big league roster, where the club’s young core largely centers on the infield.
