Donaldson day to day with tight right calf
MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins third baseman Josh Donaldson exited Friday night's 4-1 victory over the Indians with right calf tightness, the club announced. He is day to day, and the injury is not expected to be a long-term issue, manager Rocco Baldelli said after the game. Baldelli hopes that Donaldson will be able to avoid the injured list.
It remains unclear how Donaldson sustained the injury. All Baldelli could share is that Donaldson jogged back to the dugout after the top of the second inning, ran down the stairs and told the skipper that he wouldn't be able to finish the game. The Twins will evaluate Donaldson's condition again on Saturday.
"I wouldn’t say it’s super likely that he’s going to be running around out there and playing the whole game, but we’ll see how available he is to do something during the day, or over the next couple of days," Baldelli said.
Donaldson singled in the first inning in his only at-bat of the game and scored on Eddie Rosario's two-run double that gave the Twins an early 3-0 advantage. He made a pair of tricky defensive plays in the second, showing off both his range and his glove work, before Ehire Adrianza replaced Donaldson as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the frame.
Donaldson was off to a relatively slow start at the plate with his new team, as he entered Friday 3-for-21 with a homer and four walks in six games. His exemplary defense at the hot corner, though, played a significant factor in tightening up the Twins' infield play early in the regular season.
The former American League Most Valuable Player Award winner has a history of calf injuries, as he missed more than a month of his time with the Blue Jays in 2017 with a right calf strain and battled a left calf strain in '18 that cost him three and a half months with the Blue Jays and Indians. This doesn't appear to be as significant of an issue.
"It was very under control when talking about it, didn’t seem overly worked up, training staff doesn’t seem too worried about it as a long-term issue of any kind," Baldelli said.
