Learning Through Baseball Educational Tours

The Minnesota Twins Learning Through Baseball Program reaches more than 15,000 students in 150 schools annually. Established in 2012, the program's mission is to engage, enrich, and empower every student who walks through Target Field.

Our Learning Through Baseball program provides an exceptional and unique educational experience from the one-of-a-kind classroom setting that is Target Field. Our knowledgeable staff conveys baseball's beauty through a fun curriculum, which adheres to Minnesota K-12 academic standards, that students will engage with and enjoy.

The Learning Through Baseball program is rooted in the Twins’ commitment to advancing social equity by removing barriers, increasing access, and creating unique learning opportunities. We leverage the power of baseball to engage students, infuse fun into learning, and build excellence through partnerships and collaborations.

Learning Through Baseball

  • All LTB classes are customizable
  • LTB Tours are offered on Home game days but are subject to availability
  • Classes typically run two-hours in length and include one class of your choice
  • Specific tour routes are established each day based on events and activities in the ballpark

The game of baseball is loaded with the principles of science. In this tour and class, participants will learn about the energy efficiency of Target Field, the physics and science of baseball, and much more! There will be hands-on activities, such as reaction time, potential vs. kinetic energy, and the exciting opportunity to step to the plate and take a swing inside a major league batting cage! All classes are geared to meet the Minnesota State Standards.

It all adds up! Target Field is a great place to learn about math. From scoring to batting averages to geometry around the diamond, baseball and mathematics go hand-in-hand. In Mathematics at Target Field, learn and apply concepts through fun, engaging lessons and activities that are designed to meet the Minnesota State Standards during a tour of the ballpark.

It's not just the grass that's green! At Target Field, sustainability and environmental stewardship are important elements of building design and operations. Target Field achieved Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, and was the highest-ranked LEED-certified major league ballpark upon its completion. Target Field leads the way in water reuse and recycling, and transit. On the Environment and Sustainability tour, learn how LEED credits are earned at Target Field, and how the ballpark meets the many environmental challenges of a sports facility.

Behind every sports team that plays on the field, there is a second Team behind the Team working to make each game a success. From the general manager to the grounds crew, trainers and ushers, nearly 2,000 employees are needed to produce a Major League Baseball game. During the Team behind the Team tour and Q & A session, your group will learn about the many career opportunities in sports, as well as hear first-hand from Twins staff what it takes to land a job in sports. Depending on your group's specific interests, you may also discuss behind-the-scenes topics such as sport marketing, athletic training, culinary arts and more.

The Li'l Sluggers Preschool Tour is designed specifically to cater to the youngest and newest Minnesota Twins fans! During the Li'l Sluggers tour, children focus on the shapes, numbers, and colors found in the ballpark and on the field. Our tour guides will interactively teach children the basics of the game of baseball, including what it takes to score a run, how many players are on each team, and where players stand when they are on offense and defense. Children will also get to physically touch the equipment used during a game, including a baseball bat, glove, and ball. The Li'l Sluggers tour is the perfect way to introduce the game of baseball to future Twins fans!

Build it and they will come! After many years at the Metrodome, the Twins knew what they wanted: an outdoor, Minnesota ballpark. By all measures, they succeeded. Since its construction in 2010, Target Field has received many awards for its beautiful design and the high-quality fan experience. In Architecture at Target Field, tour the ballpark with its engineering and design issues in mind, learning about its site, materiels, architects, builders, structure and function.

Target Field is a great place to see a baseball game, and it's also a wonderful place to see art! From the spectacular wind veil and sculptures on Target Plaza to the many paintings and drawings on the suite level, the spaces at Target Field are filled with many examples of the visual culture of baseball. Art at Target Field sessions guide groups through the ballpark to see art, with optical sketching and drawing activities along the way.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame is certainly baseball's best known song, and it's often called the sport's anthem. Sung by millions of fans each season, it's a familiar part of the baseball experience. Few people who sing the song know more than the refrain, so very few fans know it's about Katie Casey, a fictional female fan from the turn of the twentieth century. On your tour we'll use Katie as a window to view the many and varied roles of women in baseball history, from the sport's emergence as a modern American game to the present. Women have held a variety of essential roles in baseball, from players at every level of the game (and related games, like kitten ball, diamond ball, and softball) to fans and spectators, to team owners and executives. We'll share many examples from the Minnesota Twins and Target Field during your group's tour of the ballpark.

Keeping the scorebook has been a part of baseball since the early days of the game. This class is a must for all players, parents, coaches and anyone interested in keeping score. In addition to a tour of Target Field, the class will involve a demonstration of scorekeeping as well as a look at the importance of doing so during a game. While helping coaches keep track of everything from hitter tendencies to pitch counts, keeping score can effectively help players learn about baseball and keep their focus on the game.

Levels: 4th Grade to Adult

Format: Theme-based tour and Power Point-enhanced instruction

Take a walking tour of Target Field while examining the lives and gifts of some of baseball's most iconic figures, many of whom not only changed the game, but also our society. Included in the Heroes of Baseball tour will be discussions of the role of women in baseball as well as the contributions and sacrifices of notable Native American, African American and Latin American players. Key historical personalities such as Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Charles Albert "Chief" Bender, Willie Mays, Ted Williams and Babe Ruth will be highlighted, along with a viewing of historical film clips in a classroom setting.

Levels: 4th Grade to Adult

Format: Theme-based tour and enhanced video instruction

The Language of Baseball takes a look at how baseball permeates our lives through the language that we speak, read and write. Baseball idioms will be explored, and imagining the sights, sounds, smells and emotions of the game will be brought to the forefront. Discussion topics may include how the clubhouse may differ after a win versus a loss, or how a television broadcast call may differ from a radio call. Baseball sign language will also be examined. Further, some of the greatest stories in American literature and movies, as well as many common phrases in our language that come from baseball will be discussed. Come explore Target Field and hit one out of the park with students as they step up to the plate to learn and write about the game we call America's pastime.

Levels: 4th Grade to Adult

Kids Tours

  • Kids Tours (no class) run 90-minutes long
  • Tours highlight Target Field’s environment and sustainability stewardship
  • Specific tour routes are established each day based on events and activities in the ballpark
  • All students who participant in a Kids Tour will receive a one BOGO Twins Game Ticket for the 2024 Season

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Refer a new teacher or school to our program by sharing the Reservation Form. In the reservation form, the person who you referred should select "Referral from Teacher" in the "How did you hear about us?" dropdown and provide your full name.
  2. Once the referred teacher and/or school books a field trip with us and meets the specified criteria, you become eligible for exciting incentives.
