About The Children's Center and Art Therapy

The Children’s Center’s mission is to help children and families shape their own futures. The Children’s Center exists to improve the lives of children and families, which in turn, will strengthen communities.

Art Therapy is the process of encouraging clients to express themselves in a creative manner through the creation of art.

The work produced provides a platform for participants to:

  • Externalize feelings in a tangible way.
  • Relieve painful emotions in a creative manner and uncover obstacles to healing.
  • Enhance confidence, imagination and concentration as creativity is explored.
  • Utilize art materials for the expression of ideas and emotions and provide a reflective process for insight and transformation.

Creating art allows all family members to:

  • Participate at a similar level of communication.
  • Work together and develop a sense of cooperation between each other.
  • Strengthen the family’s bond and better appreciate each other’s varied perspectives.
  • Work together on tasks and develop an overall sense of cooperation between each family member.
  • Break down barriers of communication.
  • Ease anxiety in the parent, and in turn ease the anxiety in the child.
  • Youth who participate in art therapy experience improvement in their social connections, social-emotional competence and foster positive relationships with the family and community.

Much like art therapy, comedy is a mechanism to heal. Comedy is a vehicle to socialize and make social connections. When participants are attentive and pay homage to comedy, they also learn to respect pain and respect humor as a method to heal. Comedy is a fun therapy, and it is a GREAT thing for our mental well-being.
