'Spark plug' Sogard out with stomach ailment
ANAHEIM -- Eric Sogard, whom manager Charlie Montoyo called the Blue Jays’ “spark plug,” wasn’t in Wednesday’s lineup after exiting Tuesday’s game against the Angels in the fifth inning due to a stomach issue.
“The trainer came and said, ‘Hey, he’s throwing up down there,’” Montoyo said. “And he’s such a gamer, he still went back out there [in the fourth inning] and played defence for one more time, but then when he came back, you could see [it in] his face -- ‘OK, you’re done.’”
After receiving evaluation and treatment Tuesday, Sogard was cleared by head trainer Nikki Huffman to be in the Blue Jays’ clubhouse on Wednesday. A few other Blue Jays players, including closer Ken Giles, have recently experienced similar symptoms, according to Montoyo, but Sogard is not believed to currently be contagious.
Sogard, who signed with the Blue Jays as a Minor League free agent in December, was promoted from Triple-A on April 15 and has gotten off to a hot start, batting .395/.458/.698 with three homers in 11 games (49 plate appearances).
Since his callup, Sogard has served as Toronto’s primary leadoff hitter while getting playing time at second base, third base and shortstop. With Sogard out on Wednesday, shortstop Freddy Galvis was moved up to the leadoff spot.
