Blue Jays unable to sign 2nd-round pick Singer

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays were unable to come to terms with second-round pick Brady Singer prior to Friday afternoon's signing deadline of players taken in this year's MLB Draft.

Singer was taken with the 56th overall pick of the Draft, which came with a recommended slot value of $1,091,200. Instead of signing, the 18-year-old right-handed pitcher will honor his commitment to the University of Florida.

The Florida native had been ranked the 83rd-best prospect in the Draft by MLBpipeline.com. He reportedly hits 92-94 mph on the radar gun with an ability to touch 96 after previously being in the 88-92 range.

In addition to the mid-90s fastball, Singer also possesses a slider and continues to work on a changeup. The development of those two secondary pitches could determine where his career goes.

Singer was the only prospect taken in the first 10 rounds by Toronto who remained unsigned. The Blue Jays will receive the 57th overall pick in next year's Draft as compensation for missing out on Singer.
