Astros-Tigers postponed Fri., DH Saturday
DETROIT -- Heavy rain across Michigan postponed Friday’s scheduled contest between the Tigers and Astros at Comerica Park, setting up a day-night doubleheader for Saturday.
First pitch for Saturday’s opener is 1:10 p.m. ET; all tickets from Friday’s postponed game will be good for that contest. The second game is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. Both games are scheduled for seven innings under MLB rules for doubleheaders.
The rainout resulted from a large weather system parked over the state since mid-morning. Both teams were hoping that it would move out by evening, but more storms -- heavy in some cases -- formed behind it.
“I think it’s important for us to make a good decision on playing a game in the right weather,” manager A.J. Hinch said before the postponement. “I don’t want to play through a downpour where it’s unhealthy or unsafe for our players. But we’re conditioned to play every day, we’re prepared to play every day. … We’ll be just as prepared tomorrow as we were today.”
With Friday’s postponement, the Tigers flipped their pitching order for Saturday’s doubleheader. Casey Mize, who had been scheduled to start Saturday night, will pitch the first game in a rematch of April 12, when he tossed seven scoreless innings in Houston for his first big league win. Framber Valdez will start for the Astros.
Wily Peralta, who had been scheduled to start Friday night, will start Game 2 on Saturday instead. He pitched five innings in his first Tigers start last Saturday against the Angels, allowing five runs on seven hits. Lance McCullers Jr. will start for Houston.
