Giants-Tigers finale postponed by weather
DETROIT -- The Giants and Tigers will have to wait until this summer to finish off their Interleague series at Comerica Park. Sunday’s scheduled game was postponed after a long afternoon spent hoping to wait out the weather.
The game will be made up on July 24, which had been an off-day for both teams. San Francisco will be coming off a weekend series in Washington.
Tickets for Sunday’s postponed game will be honored at the makeup game. Fans can also exchange Sunday’s tickets for a future Tigers home game.
The teams spent more than five hours trying to find a way to get in the game as they watched a storm system end what had been a beautiful week of summerlike weather in Michigan. What was hoped to be a window of dry weather to start the game on time abruptly closed when rain and winds hit Comerica Park about a half-hour before the 1:10 p.m. ET scheduled first pitch.
From there, the afternoon became a waiting game. Though the rain stopped for a period mid-afternoon, the game remained in delay, supposedly in anticipation of another batch of storms that could force another delay. That rain eventually hit, but later.
Officials from Major League Baseball and both teams met multiple times for discussions on how to proceed. Since this weekend was the Giants’ lone scheduled trip into Detroit, there was a strong desire to get the game in.
“I think we’ll do everything we can to play today and not break up the schedule moving forward,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said before the game.
The game was ultimately postponed shortly after 6 p.m.
The Tigers, who had offered fans the chance to leave the ballpark and return, or exchange their tickets for a future game if they wanted to leave, will try to make up for the long day for fans who waited it out. The team issued a statement thanking fans for their patience and said the team will reach out to everyone in attendance during the delay with an offer of complimentary tickets for a future game.
Logan Webb, the Giants' scheduled starter on Sunday, will instead start San Francisco's series opener at Miami on Monday. Matthew Boyd, who was scheduled to oppose Webb on Sunday, will now start on Monday at home in the series opener against Cleveland.
