Tigers Stat of the Day: August 2021
MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Tigers this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.
Aug. 31: A's 9, Tigers 3 -- Dashing into a double
Derek Hill had a home run -- his second in as many games -- and a highlight catch Tuesday, but the high point of his game was arguably a hustle double in the third inning, when he turned a line drive into center field into extra bases by speeding around first base and catching A's center fielder Starling Marte by surprise. Hill's home-to-second time of 7.74 seconds was the fourth fastest by a Tiger this season, and the fastest by any Tiger other than Akil Baddoo. Hill's sprint speed of 30.4 feet per second was tied for his sixth fastest on a base hit this year.
Aug. 30: Twins 3, Tigers 2 -- Close calls
The makeup contest marked the Tigers' sixth consecutive one-run game. That's their longest stretch of one-run decisions since another six-game run on July 27-Aug. 1, 1971. Detroit hasn't played a game with a final margin of greater than three runs since an 8-2 loss to the Angels on Aug. 17.
Aug. 29: Blue Jays 2, Tigers 1 -- Golfin' Harold?
Harold Castro's RBI single on Sunday came off a José Berríos changeup at his shoetops. The height of the pitch was at .72 feet -- or less than nine inches -- when Castro connected, making it the lowest pitch for a Tigers hit since Ian Kinsler golfed a Ty Blach curveball into left field for a single on July 5, 2017.
Aug. 28: Blue Jays 3, Tigers 2 -- Haase has wheels!
Eric Haase reached a sprint speed of 28.9 feet per second running down the first-base line to avoid an inning-ending double play and allow Robbie Grossman to score the tying run in the seventh inning. It was tied for his fifth-highest sprint speed this season, just shy of his top speed of 29.1 feet per second on a groundout on May 15.
Aug. 27: Tigers 2, Blue Jays 1 -- Rare inside-the-park homer
Victor Reyes' inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning was the first go-ahead, pinch-hit, inside-the-parker by an MLB hitter in the expansion era (since 1961). It was the first pinch-hit, inside-the-park home run in the Majors since the Brewers' Tyler Saladino on May 14, 2018. It's just the second one in Tigers history, the other hit by Ben Oglivie on June 2, 1976. It was the first go-ahead inside-the-park homer by a Tiger since Lou Whitaker hit one in extra innings against the Twins at the Metrodome on July 13, 1984.
Aug. 25: Cardinals 3, Tigers 2 (10 innings) -- Skubal starts off on K Street
Tarik Skubal struck out 10 over five innings, and his first seven outs of the game were punchouts. The last Tigers pitcher to get the first seven outs of a start via the strikeout was Matthew Boyd on Aug. 17, 2020.
Aug. 23: Tigers 4, Cardinals 3 -- Miggy's multihit game
With his 2-for-3 performance that included home run No. 501 just one game after he slugged the milestone round-tripper in Toronto, Miguel Cabrera moved past Willie Keeler and into 35th on the AL/NL career hits list. Cabrera has 2,957 career knocks.
Aug. 22: Tigers 5, Blue Jays 3 (11) -- Speedy Hill lays out
Until Miguel Cabrera's 500th career home run, the Tigers' play of the day was a diving catch by Derek Hill, who covered 94 feet to run down Kevin Smith's line drive in left-center field. Hill reached a sprint speed of 29.8 feet per second, his fastest speed to record an out this season.
Aug. 21: Blue Jays 3, Tigers 0 -- Miggy's 106.6 mph grounder
Though Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk, he provided the game's hardest-hit ball with a 106.6 mph grounder that turned into a double play. Cabrera has four of the Tigers' five hardest-hit double-play grounders this season, and six of the top 20 since 2019.
Aug. 20: Tigers 4, Blue Jays 1 -- Short's big steal of third
Zack Short set up the tying run in Friday's win with help from a one-out steal of third base in the eighth inning off pitcher Robbie Ray and catcher Alejandro Kirk. Short swiped third for the first time in his brief big league career with help from a secondary lead of 35.1 feet, the largest lead by a Tiger this season.
"I love the steal of third base. I'll tell you about it on Monday [after the series is over]," manager A.J. Hinch said when asked if Short was going on his own decision.
Aug. 19: Angels 13, Tigers 10 -- Miggy's four-RBI game
Miguel Cabrera remains at 499 career home runs, but he also remained productive in Thursday's loss, driving in four runs in the first two innings, with an RBI single and a bases-clearing double. It marked just the fourth time in his career he has posted four or more RBIs in the first two innings, the last on Sept. 27, 2016, against Cleveland. Meanwhile, Cabrera's 591st career double put him within one of tying Todd Helton for 19th on MLB's all-time list.
Aug. 18: Angels 3, Tigers 1 -- Willi launches HR
Willi Castro's fifth-inning homer off Shohei Ohtani had a 36-degree launch angle, according to Statcast. That's tied for the highest launch angle for a home run in Castro's big league career.
Aug. 17: Angels 8, Tigers 2 -- Tigers walk around Ohtani
Detroit manager A.J. Hinch is notoriously stingy with intentional walks. Shohei Ohtani's free pass in the sixth inning Tuesday was the seventh intentional walk from the Tigers this season, one more than the Orioles and Yankees for least in the Majors. "He's certainly the most dangerous player in the league," Hinch said. "That's the biggest hat tip I can give him, where I don't want any part of him." Ohtani is one of two hitters the Tigers have intentionally walked twice this season, joining Nelson Cruz.
Aug. 15: Indians 11, Tigers 0 -- Miggy looks to Halos for No. 500
Miguel Cabrera went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Sunday, and will remain at 499 home runs heading into Tuesday's series opener against the Angels at Comerica Park. Cabrera has hit 16 career home runs off Angels pitching, most recently on July 29, 2019, off Jaime Barria at Angel Stadium. He's 1-for-5 with an RBI single in his career against Tuesday's scheduled starter, Dylan Bundy.
Aug. 14: Tigers 6, Indians 4 -- Short on hits, but not RBIs
Zack Short ended an 0-for-30 stretch with an RBI single in the fourth inning. It was his 17th hit of the season, but also his 18th RBI, thanks to six RBIs that have come on sacrifice flies. No Tiger has ever finished a season with 20 or more RBIs and less than 20 hits or with 25 or more RBIs with less than 25 hits.
Aug. 13: Indians 7, Tigers 4 -- Efficient Eric Hasse
Eric Haase's 19th home run of the season was a 440-foot drive to Comerica Park's center-field shrubs Friday night. He has six of Detroit's 12 longest home runs this season by Statcast-projected distance.
Aug. 12: Tigers 6, Orioles 4 -- Tigers love triples
Jeimer Candelario's fifth-inning triple was the third three-bagger hit this series by the Tigers, who lead the Majors with 29 triples after Thursday. Detroit's prolific series was especially impressive considering that Camden Yards' park factor for triples was only 0.720 entering Thursday.
Aug. 11: Tigers 5, Orioles 2 -- Miggy's mastery of Harvey
Miguel Cabrera's 499th home run on Wednesday night came in only his 11th at-bat vs. Matt Harvey, even though the two men have coexisted in the big leagues for most of the last decade. Still, Cabrera has had the upper hand, going 8-for-11 with one homer and two doubles against Harvey. To that end, Cabrera's chances at No. 500 on Thursday look slim against Orioles starter John Means -- he's only 1-for-8 lifetime with a single against the Baltimore lefty.
Aug. 10: Tigers 9, Orioles 4 -- Jeimer's homer a soft smash
In the eighth inning of Tuesday's contest at Camden Yards, Jeimer Candelario smacked his eighth homer of the season -- a two-run shot to right field. The ball left his bat at 90.7 mph, the softest-hit homer in his career and the fifth-softest-hit home run in the Statcast era (since 2015). It's also the lowest exit velocity on a homer since José Iglesias' 90.3 mph shot on May 24, 2017.
Aug. 8: Indians 7, Tigers 5 -- Hill of a round-tripper
Derek Hill's first Major League home run was a Statcast-projected 404-foot drive off Cleveland's Zach Plesac that hit the top of Progressive Field's high left-field wall and bounced back into play. Hill sped around the bases before seeing third-base coach Ramon Santiago signal that the ball was ruled a homer. Hill's trip around the bases lasted 18.6 seconds, the second-fastest by a Tiger on a home run this season, according to Statcast. Eric Haase had a 15.6-second trip on his inside-the-park homer on July 3 against the White Sox. Hill had a sprint speed of 29.2 feet per second on his trip.
Aug. 7: Tigers 2, Indians 1 -- More like Zack fly
Zack Short opened the scoring with a second-inning sacrifice fly. It was Short's sixth sac fly of the season, tying him for the team lead with Miguel Cabrera, Jonathan Schoop and Robbie Grossman despite playing just 39 games. He already has the most by a Tigers shortstop in a season since Jhonny Peralta hit nine in 2011.
Aug. 6: Indians 6, Tigers 1 -- Hill of a throw home
The Tigers had a rough series opener at Progressive Field, but it could've been worse if not for Derek Hill's throw home to retire Bobby Bradley on a Harold Ramirez single. Hill's throw registered at 94.4 mph, according to Statcast, the fastest throw by a Tigers outfielder this season.
Aug. 5: Tigers 8, Red Sox 1 -- Reyes triples twice
Switch-hitter Victor Reyes tripled off Red Sox lefty starter Martín Pérez in the second inning of Thursday's win, then he turned around to triple in two runs off righty reliever Hansel Robles in the fifth. Not only did he record the Tigers' first two-triple game since Ian Kinsler on July 17, 2017, he became the first MLB player to triple from both sides of the plate in the same game since Dmitri Young on May 6, 2003, at Camden Yards in Baltimore. Young fell a double shy of the cycle that game. He actually had it when he drove in the go-ahead run off lefty Buddy Groom in the eighth inning, but kept going past second base to get the triple in an attempt to set up an add-on run.
Aug. 4: Red Sox 4, Tigers 1 -- Miggy's slow single
Miguel Cabrera's 2,945th career hit was a sixth-inning single on a squibber down the first-base line and into short right field. The 56.9 mph exit velocity was his second-lowest on a base hit this season, and his lowest on a base hit to reach the outfield in the Statcast era since 2015.
Aug. 3: Tigers 4, Red Sox 2 -- More Miggy stats
While Miguel Cabrera continued his march towards 500 home runs with his 498th career dinger, he saw a pair of streaks end. He went 68 pitches without a swing and miss from last Thursday against Baltimore until he swung at a 90 mph splitter from Hirokazu Sawamura. Later, his seventh-inning strikeout against Yacksel Rios ended a streak of 27 plate appearances without a strikeout. It had been the second-longest active streak in the Majors, trailing only Pittsburgh's Kevin Newman at 30.
Aug. 1: Tigers 6, Orioles 2 -- Castro's over-the-shoulder catch
Harold Castro covered 92 feet from his position at second base to make an over-the-shoulder catch on an Austin Hays popup in left-center field. It's his longest run for a catch in fair territory as a second baseman this season, and his second-most ground covered on a catch this year.
