Bowlan makes 'very surreal' debut in rain-suspended game

DETROIT -- Nearly 18 hours after rain suspended Wednesday night’s game at Comerica Park, the Royals and Tigers resumed and followed a similar script from the first four innings.

Kansas City mustered just four hits against the Tigers' pitching staff -- two Wednesday night against starter Tarik Skubal and two Thursday against the bullpen -- while Detroit crushed three homers to hand the Royals an 8-0 loss.

The Royals pieced together the remainder of the suspended game with their bullpen on Thursday, with Steven Cruz throwing the fifth inning. He walked three and hit another as the Tigers scored two, and Jackson Kowar allowed a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the final blow.

“We went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, then we go out and give up two right away,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “So that really didn’t give us a good shot the rest of the way. We didn’t do enough to manufacture anything.”

made his Major League debut as Wednesday’s opener and threw two innings with two strikeouts, allowing the 511th career home run to Tigers icon Miguel Cabrera in his final homestand. But the 26-year-old Bowlan impressed with his elevated fastball at 95 mph -- which struck out leadoff man Parker Meadows -- and a nasty slider.

“[The first strikeout] was exciting,” Bowlan said. “It was a good start. Just tried to take it one pitch at a time and execute pitches and do the best I could do. … The [Cabrera] situation was very, very surreal. All the lights going on, the standing ovation he got. And then he got up to the plate, and I was like, ‘All right, I just have to locate this pitch.’ Next thing you know, he put a good swing on it. If I was to give up my first home run, I’d rather it be to a Hall of Famer than anyone else."

Lefty Angel Zerpa followed Bowlan for bulk work as the rain picked up Wednesday, allowing a pinch-hit three-run homer to Tyler Nevin in the fourth inning. Minutes later, as Skubal warmed up for the fifth, the grounds crew pulled the tarp on the field.
