Latin America Player Programs

Dominican Republic Academy

Dominican Baseball Academy and ESL Program

The Kansas City Royals Dominican Baseball Academy, located in San Antonio de Guerra, Dominican Republic, is a vital training and development facility for the organization’s baseball players from the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries. This academy provides aspiring athletes the resources, training, and support necessary to follow their dreams of becoming professional baseball players in the Major Leagues.

The resources we provide players are vast. We include coursework in the English language, culture, wellness, technology, and finance to help players feel equipped to live in the United States or other countries and have a knowledge base to succeed. Additionally, we teach them different life skills and provide career transition advice to help them feel prepared on and off the field. This includes skills like driving and time management, as well as learning how to gain admittance into United States or Dominican Republic universities.

Our program participants are also encouraged to give back to their communities through efforts like Casa Amor Orphanage visits, house painting, beach clean-ups, and baseball clinic instruction. Player efforts on and off the field are recognized with the Royals Way Award.

Latin America Player Program

US Education and ESL Program

Once our players come to the United States, we continue to work with them by providing continued education and language courses. Many of our players in the Royals US Education and ESL Program arrive from our Dominican Republic Baseball Academy ESL Program. The US program begins in Arizona and has affiliate teachers who work with our players all the way through AA. The courses focus on the English language and acculturation from Latin America to the United States. Our players learn to apply the English language to different American cultural settings.

The goal of the program is to not only learn about the English language and culture but also to be good citizens and role models in society. Players bring what they learn in the program out to the community at different events to give testimonies and provide instruction. This includes reading nights, camps and clinics, and public speaking to help teach youth and locals what they have also learned themselves.

Every year, there is a celebration for those who graduate from the program by scoring high enough on the year-end test. The ceremony is held at the Royals' Spring Training facility in Surprise, Arizona, where many current and former players and front office staff attend to show support for the graduates. Several current big-league players, including the Royals’ own Freddy Fermin, have graduated from the Royals' US Education and ESL program.

We know that not all players make the big leagues. Our players who do not advance in baseball are supported with admittance into college or securing jobs outside of baseball.
