Bruce Sherman is in his seventh season as Principal Owner of the Miami Marlins. Mr. Sherman serves as Chairman of the Board, representing the fourth ownership in Club history after receiving unanimous approval from Major League Baseball Owners to acquire the team effective October 2, 2017. Mr. Sherman currently serves on Major League Baseball’s Executive Council, Strategic Planning Committee, and International Committee.
Over his six years as Chairman and Principal Owner, the Marlins have reached the Postseason on two occasions. First in the shortened 2020 season, during which the club swept the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card Series, and then fell short in the NL Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins then reached the Postseason again in 2023, marking the first such time in a full season since 2003. In his tenure, the Marlins have had two managers win Manager of the Year (2020 and 2023), and players win the Cy Young (2022) and Batting Champion (2023) Awards.
Mr. Sherman is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of M4 Capital, having retired from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Private Capital Management (“PCM”) in 2009. He launched PCM in 1986 and built it into the largest independent asset manager in the Southeastern United States prior to selling the firm to Legg Mason in 2001. Following the sale, he retained autonomy over PCM’s portfolio management and investment research and led the company to a prestigious #1 ranking in the country as measured by Nelson’s “World’s Best Money Managers”
for 10 years.
In February 2024, Mr. Sherman was named a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award. Mr. Sherman joins 10 other exceptional business, civic and cultural leaders from across North America in receiving 2024 honors by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education.
Mr. Sherman has invested professionally and personally in the South Florida community. He has two daughters and four grandchildren, and is married to Cynthia Sherman, a retired partner of international law firm Rogers & Wells. He and his wife have been Lifetime Trustees for the Naples Children & Education Foundation supporting underprivileged and at-risk children in Collier County for more than 20 years. Mr. Sherman also formerly served on the Board of Directors of Artis-Naples, the premier center for the performing and visual arts in Southwest Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Sherman founded the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation which supports a variety of medical institutions and health initiatives and administers the Sherman Prize, which recognizes and rewards leading individuals who go above and beyond to make exceptional, pioneering contributions and inspire tomorrow’s innovators in the fight to overcome Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Mr. Sherman graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1969 and earned his MBA from Bernard Baruch College in 1973. He and his wife reside in Boca Raton, Fla.
