Girls and boys aged 8 – 12 years old is the primary age group. However the activities can be adapted to suit any age group, younger and older, all abilities and those with little to no baseball experience.
MLB First Pitch is a grassroots resource that introduces young people all over the world to baseball.
Providing an entry-level program, MLB First Pitch focuses on fun above all else. The compelling baseball-led activities that make up the program are designed to be inclusive and to create a high-energy, fun-filled experience that participants enjoy.
The goal of the program is to spark interest through play and ultimately create a new generation of players (and parents) that want to follow MLB and join organized baseball activities in their local area.
How does MLB First Pitch work?
Participants are introduced to baseball via activity cards that focus on the active skills of baseball: hitting, pitching, fielding, running and gameplay. Each card has a short and simple guide to running each activity, including suggested adaptations to make the activity easier or harder.
Deliverers of the program can use the resources to organize activities for different groups of young people across multiple settings.
- Create a Season - use the activity cards to run as an 8-week program that progresses baseball activities and skills over time.
- Host a Festival - an event that provides an opportunity for young people to ‘have a go’ at the 5 active skills of baseball.
- Run a Championship - an event focused on gameplay, either as a tournament or a single game.
