PHOENIX -- Something seemed off about Tyler Clippard almost immediately in his relief outing for the D-backs on Friday afternoon. His velocity seemed down, and his command was off.

The 36-year-old wound up walking off the mound without retiring any of the seven hitters he faced and suffering from what the team said was right shoulder discomfort.

"He's currently being evaluated, and we'll continue to do that through the rest of the day and tomorrow," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "He just felt the discomfort as the inning was building."

Clippard allowed a double, single, walk, home run, single and a hit batter before leaving with a 3-0 count on Zach Green.

"I felt like he was trying to spin his breaking ball up there, and he really couldn't get a feel for it or get extension on it," Lovullo said. "The changeup I think he was yanking a little bit. The fastball obviously wasn't coming out the way that he wanted, and those were the things that I was seeing. But I just didn't think much about it because I want to let him get his work in. But it was clearly a sign that something wasn't right."

The D-backs signed Clippard on Feb. 26 to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2022. Clippard will get a guaranteed $2.25 million in ‘21, and the option for ‘22 is $3.5 million.

Clippard, who is expected to be part of the late-inning portion of the D-backs’ bullpen, has been remarkably durable during his career. Since 2010, he has appeared in at least 67 games in every season except for ‘19, when appeared in 53 games for Cleveland, and ‘20, when he appeared in 26 of the Twins’ 60 games.
