Russell scratched; Bryant takes big step with BP
Cubs SS resting with shoulder inflammation; 3B nearing rehab assignment
DETROIT -- Addison Russell was scratched from the Cubs' lineup before Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to the Tigers because of right shoulder inflammation, one of a few aches and pains that the shortstop has been dealing with lately.
Russell also has been trying to play despite a sore knuckle on his left hand, and he said prior to Tuesday's game that the off-day Monday had helped.
"He's been playing with it for a while," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said of Russell's sore shoulder. "We have to back off."
BP promising development for KB
Kristopher Bryant took a big step in his rehab on Tuesday, when he took part in batting practice on the field with the Cubs.
"Everything that's been going on in the cage is good," said Bryant, who has been on the disabled list since July 24 with left shoulder inflammation. "It's nice to finally get out there and feel a part of the team again."
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Bryant's rehab has been mapped out, and he could begin a Minor League assignment soon.
"We're optimistic he'll return and play a really significant role," Epstein said Tuesday. "He's getting close to doing a rehab assignment, but he's not all the way there yet."
Upcoming probables
• The Cubs are sorting through their pitching options to find a starter for Friday. Cole Hamels will open the Cubs' four-game series against the Reds on Thursday, Friday is open and Jose Quintana will start on Saturday.
Tyler Chatwood had filled in for Mike Montgomery, who is on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, but Chatwood struggled and was not considered an option.
Wedding bells
Speaking of Montgomery, he took advantage of the off-day to get married. The Cubs' team chaplain performed the ceremony in Farmington Hills, Mich. Montgomery invited about 20 family members to the event.
