Bruce Sutter - 1953-2022

Your Thoughts on Bruce Sutter

"I'll never forget sitting five rows behind home plate one night and got to see Bruce Sutter close out a game. I was awestruck in disbelief watching his pitches dance to the plate. Not only did they drop off at the last split second but they jerked around the entire way to the plate like they were being controlled remotely. My mind was blown! I don't know how anyone could hit his split finger fastball except by pure luck! Amazing!"

"Bruce was always one of my favorite Cardinals players. I remember him at the Opening Days. But the best memory is when he and Darrell Porter were hugging after the final out, winning the 1982 World Series. It will be etched in my memory forever. Cardinals Nation truly is the best, Condolences to his family, friends, and fans. We will never forget you, Bruce!"

"It is with much sadness to hear this news. I was at a game last month, discussing the great Cardinals' closer, Bruce Sutter. I loved watching him pitch and the pitch that he developed... I think it was the split finger, but it may have been something else. I'm a Red Birds Cardinals Fan for Life and as we have lived all over the USA, we never wavered our support of the MLB Cardinals and Bruce Sutter was one of the Best of those players! May He rest in peace."

“I can remember watching that split fingered fastball drop out of sight as it approached the hitter. My first brand new glove was a Bruce Sutter signature model. I was 12 years old when he threw the final pitch of the 1982 World Series, and after a final swing and a miss, he pumped that right fist into the air, something that I still remember today 40 years later, just like it was yesterday. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Sutter family.”

“The chills run up and down my spine when I remember seeing the last pitch of the 1982 season leaving Bruce’s hand. The ball bested Gorman Thomas as the late Porter caught the ball. Porter threw his arms up, while leaping at the same time. When he got to the mound to embrace his teammate, history was made, passionate fans were born this day. I am one of them. This is my first memory of falling in love with this game. Thank you, Bruce. I’ll always remember you.”

“Among the greatest moments of my childhood was the 1982 World Series clinching pitch by Bruce Sutter to Daryl Porter. I hugged my dear mother (whom I lost one year ago) just as the two players embraced on the field. I remember his dominance as a Cub and Cardinal. May his memory be a blessing.”
