The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired 3B Matt Chapman from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for RHP Gunnar Hoglund, LHP Zach Logue, INF Kevin Smith, and LHP Kirby Snead.

Chapman, 28, is coming off his third Gold Glove campaign in which he also hit 27 homers and drove in 72 runs in 151 games for the Oakland Athletics. The native of Victorville, CA, led all third basemen with a .987 fielding percentage and also has two career AL Platinum Glove awards to go with his 2018 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year trophy. The 6-0, 215 lb. right-handed hitter was named an All-Star in 2019 as he set career bests with 75 extra-base hits and 91 RBI. Over the course of five Major League seasons, Chapman has batted .243 with 111 home runs, 296 RBI, and an .808 OPS, playing all 573 career games for the A’s.

Hoglund, 22, was selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, 19th overall. In his sophomore season, the native of Dunedin, FL, was 3-0 with a 1.16 ERA prior to baseball being shut down by COVID-19 in March 2020. The 6-4, 220 lb. right-hander struck out 96 batters in 62.2 innings, with a 4-2 record and a 2.87 ERA at the University of Mississippi, before undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2021.

Logue, 25, split his 2021 season between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo, combining to go 12-4 with a 3.67 ERA over 24 starts and one relief appearance. The lefty was drafted by Toronto in the ninth round out of the University of Kentucky in 2017. Over the course of four Minor League seasons, the native of Mason, OH, has gone 32-16 with a 3.43 ERA.

Smith, 25, made his Major League debut this past August and hit his first career home run during his 18 games with the Blue Jays. The Greenbush, NY, native spent most of the year with Triple-A Buffalo and was named Triple-A East’s Postseason All-Star Shortstop as he hit .285 with a .931 OPS for the Bisons. Buffalo’s 2021 Stan Barron Most Valuable Player was drafted in the fourth round by the Blue Jays in 2017 and has hit .268 during his 400 Minor League contests.

Snead, 27, also made his Major League debut in 2021, keeping a 2.35 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP over the course of his seven appearances. The 6-1, 218 lb. lefty also had 36 outings for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons where he went 2-0 with a 1.58 ERA. The University of Florida product was selected by the Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft and boasts a 2.86 ERA for his five seasons in the Minors.
