Shaw day to day after exiting early
Blue Jays third baseman Travis Shaw was removed from Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to the Red Sox at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, N.Y., between the second and third innings with right knee discomfort, the club announced.
Shaw had popped out in his only at-bat of the game, though the issue was not noticeable at the time. Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo is calling it a “day-to-day” issue for now, but the club expects to have more information soon.
“We might have to make some moves. We’ll see,” Montoyo said. “It’s all about how much pitching we need. We’ve got to cover so many innings.”
The Blue Jays’ next off-day is not until Sept. 10, with bullpen days already scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, which is why bench depth has taken a back seat to additional arms for the time being.
Shaw is now hitting .216 with a .635 OPS, including three home runs. Shaw has hit right-handed pitching slightly better and has provided the Blue Jays a defensive upgrade at third base from Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who moved across the diamond to first base, but the 30-year-old is still working to regain his form from earlier in his career with the Red Sox and Brewers.
Joe Panik entered in Shaw’s place and shifted to second base, sending Brandon Drury back over to play third. Panik went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, Montoyo said that Guerrero was still taking regular ground balls at third base just in case he was needed there again. Along with Panik and Drury, the club’s other option at third would be utility man Santiago Espinal, who played shortstop on Tuesday.
If the Blue Jays decide that Shaw needs an injured-list stint, or even a few days of rest, he’ll be joining a crowded group that the club needs back soon. Closer Ken Giles and star shortstop Bo Bichette are on the IL, along with No. 1 prospect Nate Pearson and fellow starters Matt Shoemaker and Trent Thornton.
