Gurriel Jr. placed on IL with left quad strain
TORONTO -- Among the memorable moments of the Blue Jays' 12-6 loss to the Yankees on Thursday night was a lowlight in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Running down the first-base line to leg out a leadoff infield single, outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. clutched his left quadriceps and fell to the ground in pain as he passed the bag. Before Saturday's game, he was officially placed on the injured list with a Grade 1 quad strain. In a corresponding move, right-hander Brock Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
“We just got the MRI back from Gurriel. ... He’s moving around fine ... but then the MRI showed something,” manager Charlie Montoyo said before Friday’s 8-2 win over the Yankees. “But it’s not bad. It’s a Grade 1, so it shouldn’t take that long, which is good news.”
The team hopes Gurriel can return when his 10 days on the IL are up.
Gurriel has been a mainstay in the lineup since returning in late May from a five-and-a-half-week stint in the Minor Leagues, and in the 79 games he's played in the Majors this season, he has hit .279/.331/.548 with 19 home runs, 18 doubles and two triples.
On Wednesday against the Rays, Gurriel hit the 30th home run of his career in his 143rd Major League game, reaching the 30-homer mark faster than any player in franchise history.
Stewart was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday to make room for Zack Godley on the 25-man roster. The 27-year-old right-hander was acquired by Toronto from the Dodgers off waivers on July 31 and activated on Monday. In his lone appearance for the Blue Jays, Stewart threw four shutout innings of relief on Wednesday against the Rays, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out three.
