OAKLAND -- Newly acquired Ken Giles had a well-documented incident with Astros manager AJ Hinch earlier this season, but Blue Jays manager John Gibbons doesn't think he'll be an issue in Toronto.
Giles got into a verbal spat with Hinch when he was removed during the ninth inning of a game against the A's on July 10. The two exchanged words and Hinch later said that Giles "has got to sort some things out." The next day Giles was optioned to the Minor Leagues and never returned.
When Gibbons was asked about Giles he quickly made light of his own past disagreements with players. During Gibbons' first tenure as manager for Toronto he had run-ins with Shea Hillenbrand and Ted Lilly.
"I've had my own issues with players in the past so it's not like it's going to be [an issue]," Gibbons said before breaking into laughter. "I don't know what happened down there, but we've had a lot of guys who have really come into their own once they've come to this team. Hopefully that happens here. It'll be a new start for him too, which I'm sure he needs."
The Blue Jays acquired Giles alongside prospects Hector Perez and David Paulino from the Astros on Monday afternoon in exchange for suspended closer Roberto Osuna. It was the third trade the Blue Jays made in the days leading up to Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline after previously sending J.A. Happ to the Yankees and reliever Seunghwan Oh to the Rockies.
Gibbons confirmed that the Blue Jays acquired Giles to be their closer. The 27-year-old posted a career-high 34 saves last season for Houston with a 2.30 ERA. This year he was 12-for-12 in save opportunities, but struggled overall with a 4.99 ERA.
The addition of Giles will allow Toronto to slot right-hander Dennis Tepera back into his customary set-up role. The Blue Jays also have veterans John Axford, Tyler Clippard and Aaron Loup in middle relief, but the Blue Jays are expected to shop all three prior to the Deadline.
"That's been his targeted role since he has been in the big leagues because everybody thinks he can do it," Gibbons said. "So, yeah, he'll get the chance to close out some games for us."
Donaldson placed on 60-day DL
The Blue Jays placed third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 60-day disabled list on Monday, retroactive to May 28. The move was simply procedural to open another spot on the 40-man roster and is not specifically related to a timeline for Donaldson's return.
Toronto announced on Monday afternoon that Donaldson is performing plyometric jumping exercises and working on power in his legs. He has continued his running drills and is scheduled to begin sprinting at some point this week. Donaldson, who has been out since May 28 with a strained left calf, is still without an exact timetable for a return.
Gurriel waits for diagnosis
Toronto infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. underwent an MRI on Monday morning, and the results are currently being reviewed by the club's medical staff and a foot/ankle specialist. Gurriel left Sunday afternoon's game in Chicago during the ninth inning after an awkward slide into second base.

Gurriel was sent for X-rays, which came back negative, but the club needed an MRI to determine whether there was any damage to ligaments in the area. For now, he has been diagnosed with contusions to his left knee and left ankle.
Injury updates
• Kevin Pillar participated in on-field batting practice on Monday afternoon for the first time since he sprained his sternoclavicular (SC) joint on July 14. He is throwing and running without restrictions and will look to incorporate diving and sliding this week. Pillar is expected to be out for at least a couple of more weeks.
• Right-hander Aaron Sanchez is scheduled for his second bullpen session on Tuesday. Sanchez has been out since June 21 with a contusion on his right middle finger.
Worth mentioning
Right-hander Oliver Drake was designated assignment on Monday afternoon. Drake made two appearances for the Blue Jays after being claimed off waivers late last week. Drake's departure combined with Donaldson's move to the 60-day DL meant the Blue Jays were able to add Giles and Paulino to the 40-man roster.
