Tatis, Semien named May's top players
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Marcus Semien were named MLB's Players of the Month for May on Wednesday.
Tatis was named the National League Player of the Month presented by Chevrolet after showcasing his electric power-speed combo for the Padres. Semien's resurgence with the Blue Jays made him the American League Player of the Month presented by Chevrolet.
Tatis crushed nine home runs and stole eight bases in May, leading the NL in steals and finishing second in home runs. The 22-year-old superstar shortstop batted .353 and slugged .824 in 20 games for San Diego, leading the NL with 26 RBIs and ranking second with 21 runs scored.
Semien got red hot in May after a slow start to the year with Toronto. The 30-year-old second baseman led qualified AL hitters in batting average (.368), slugging percentage (.702) and OPS (1.130) while ranking second in on-base percentage (.429). Semien also hit eight home runs with 22 RBIs for the month.
This is Tatis' second career Player of the Month Award -- he also won last August, making him the Padres' most recent winner.
It's the first career Player of the Month Award for Semien. He's the Blue Jays' first winner since Edwin EncarnaciĆ³n in August 2015.
