The A's have acquired infielder Kendrys Morales and cash from the Blue Jays in exchange for Minor League infielder Jesus Lopez and international slot money. Right-hander Jharel Cotton has been placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Morales on Oakland's roster.

Morales, 35, could fill the current void at first base, with Matt Olson undergoing hamate excision surgery on his right hand that will likely sideline him for an extended period of time.

Morales is owed $12 million on the final year of the three-year deal he signed with Toronto. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Blue Jays are sending more than $10 million to the A's.

Morales was primarily a designated hitter in two seasons with Toronto, appearing at first base in just 30 games during that span. He bounced back following a down year at the plate in 2017, slashing .249/.331/.438 with 21 home runs in 471 plate appearances in '18.

A's manager Bob Melvin had indicated prior to Wednesday's trade that Mark Canha and Jurickson Profar would fill in at first base during Olson's absence, so they presumably will be the backup options at the position if needed.

Lopez, 22, slashed .239/.293/.402 with 10 home runs in 84 games for Class A Beloit last season, seeing time at second base, shortstop and third base. The A's signed him out of Nicaragua in 2014.
