ST. PETERSBURG -- Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts had to leave Thursday night's game against the Rays, a 4-1 loss, shortly after getting hit on the right hand with a 92.1-mph fastball by right-hander Jacob Faria.
The early diagnosis was a contusion of the hand; X-rays were negative, and he is day to day.
Bogaerts was doubled over in pain after taking the pitch in the top of the first.
"I've been hit quite a few times in my hand, in that area, and on the other hand," said Bogaerts. "This was probably the one that hurt the most, even with the ice on and getting treatment. It was definitely the one that hit me hardest."
Any chance he plays on Friday?
"It doesn't feel good," he said. "We'll see how I come in tomorrow. But as of now, it's pretty sore. I'll put a lot of ice on and see what happens tomorrow."
The injury came about an hour after Bogaerts finished second in the Esurance Final Vote to Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas.
"I mean, I lost, and then I got hit, so that was two tough ones," quipped Bogaerts.
After he was hit by the pitch, Bogaerts was initially able to stay in the game and take his base, but when the Red Sox went out for defense in the bottom of the first, Tzu-Wei Lin moved from third base to shortstop, and Deven Marrero entered the game at third base and took over for Bogaerts in the third spot in the batting order.
"I was wondering how it would feel throwing, because it was on the throwing hand. I threw the first one [in warmups] and knew it wasn't good," Bogaerts said. "I had to make the longer throw, and I knew I couldn't be able to do it."
