Red Sox-Twins game postponed, split DH Sunday

September 22nd, 2024

BOSTON -- The Red Sox-Twins game scheduled for Saturday at Fenway Park was postponed due to rain. It will be made up on Sunday as a split doubleheader, with Game 1 scheduled to start at 12:35 p.m. ET and Game 2 set to start at 5:35 p.m. ET.

Sunday's originally scheduled game will be the first game of the doubleheader, with the start time moved up an hour from 1:35 to 12:35. Saturday's postponed game will be the second game of the twin bill. Tickets for Saturday's game will be good for admission to the rescheduled contest.

Twins ace Pablo López will match up with Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta in Game 1. Lopez is 15-8 with a 3.84 ERA and 187 strikeouts in 30 starts this season, while Pivetta is 5-11 with a 4.37 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 25 games (24 starts).

Minnesota right-hander Zebby Matthews will face Boston righty Kutter Crawford in Game 2. The 24-year-old Matthews is 1-3 with a 6.30 ERA and 32 strikeouts in seven starts in his rookie season. Crawford is 8-15 with a 4.19 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 31 starts.

This series holds major playoff implications for the Twins, who are 81-73 and hold the third American League Wild Card spot. Minnesota is just a half-game behind the division-rival Royals (82-73) for the second Wild Card spot -- but also just a half-game ahead of another division rival seeking a playoff berth, the Tigers (81-74).

The Red Sox (76-78) are five games out of the Wild Card race with just eight games remaining in the regular season.

The Twins won Friday's series opener in Boston, 4-2, in 12 innings.
