Rhode Island Red Sox Service Scholarship recipients to be introduced at Fenway Park Sunday

As part of Rhode Island Day at Fenway Park on Sunday, May 4, the Red Sox Foundation will introduce the 25 recipients of the Rhode Island Red Sox Service Scholarship program during ceremonies before the 1:35 p.m. Red Sox-Oakland game.

The program awards students from public high schools across Rhode Island with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility, and demonstrated community service. Rhode Island Speaker of the House Nicholas Matiello is scheduled to attend the ceremony.

The Rhode Island Service Scholarship program was introduced in 2012 by Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee and Red Sox Principal Owner John W. Henry and his wife Linda Pizzuti Henry. This year, the program has been expanded to include 25 students from 25 different Rhode Island public schools, up from 20 students in 2013 and 10 students in 2012. 

"In addition to increasing the number of scholarship recipients in Rhode Island, the Foundation has also expanded the program this year to include students and schools in each of the six New England states," said Red Sox Foundation Chairman Tom Werner. "We look forward to welcoming to Fenway Park these deserving students from the Ocean State, and honoring all of our scholarship recipients throughout the season for their achievements in the classroom and in their communities."

This year's Rhode Island Red Sox Service Scholarship Award recipients include:

The Red Sox will also celebrate Rhode Island Day at Fenway Park on Sunday. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Alex & Ani CFO and Cranston, Rhode Island, resident David Rozen. The national anthem will be sung by University of Rhode Island student Chris Davey. The Bristol Rhode Island Police will carry the colors, and children from St. Mary's Home in North Providence will say "play ball."
