Prospect Johnson unharmed after carjacking
BOSTON -- Red Sox left-hander Brian Johnson, who made his Major League debut in 2015, was unharmed following a carjacking incident in Florida.
According to the Florida Today, the incident took place at about 2 a.m. ET on Friday at a convenience store in Cocoa Beach. Thomas Carrigan, the driver and owner of the car Johnson was in, also escaped injury.
Johnathan Oshaun Gould, 31, was arrested a short time after the incident and charged with carjacking, aggravated assault, persons engaged in a criminal offense having weapons, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and violation of felony probation, the report said.
The Red Sox have been in contact with Johnson and released the following statement:
"Brian made us aware of this incident earlier today. As media reports indicate, a suspect has been arrested. We are thankful that Brian came away unharmed."
Gould reportedly shot a bullet into the ground and a fragment struck Carrigan in the leg.
Sherriff's deputies reportedly captured Gould in the stolen vehicle after he was clocked traveling 125 mph on a Florida highway.
Johnson, the fourth-ranked prospect in the Red Sox's farm system, has spent the offseason recovering from an elbow injury that cut his season short.
The lefty made his debut for the Red Sox on July 21 in Houston, giving up three hits and four runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss. Johnson would have gotten other chances to pitch for Boston down the stretch, but his elbow injury popped up shortly thereafter.
Johnson had a strong year at Triple-A Pawtucket, going 9-6 with a 2.53 ERA in 18 starts.
