Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox announced the following roster moves today:

• Catcher David Ross was activated from the 60-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, catcher Ryan Lavarnway was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after last night's game. To make room for Ross on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Andrew Bailey was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
   
• Infielder Brock Holt was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, shortstop Xander Bogaerts was selected to the active major league roster from Pawtucket. To make room for Bogaerts on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

• Right-handed pitcher Rubby De La Rosa was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brayan Villarreal was recalled from Pawtucket. 

Bogaerts, Ross, and Villarreal will be available for tonight's game against the Giants in San Francisco at 10:15 p.m. ET. Bogaerts will wear No. 72 and Villarreal will wear No. 60.

Bogaerts, 20, has hit .297 (132-for-444) with 23 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, 67 RBI, 63 walks, 72 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 116 minor league games this season between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket. He began the year with the Sea Dogs, where he batted .311 (68-for-219) with 12 doubles, six triples, six home runs, and 35 RBI in 56 games prior to a June 13 promotion to Triple-A. In 60 games for Pawtucket, he has a .284 average (64-for-225) with 11 doubles, nine homers, and 32 RBI while appearing at shortstop (49 games) and third base (10 games). Selected to his second straight XM All-Star Futures Game this summer, the native of Oranjestad, Aruba entered the year as the top Red Sox prospect according to Baseball America after earning Boston's Minor League Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2012. At 20 years old, he is the youngest player in the International League this season and becomes the third-youngest active major leaguer behind fellow 20-year-olds Bryce Harper and Jurickson Profar. Signed by Boston as an international free agent on August 23, 2009, Bogaerts has a .296 batting average, .373 on-base percentage, and .489 slugging percentage in 378 career minor league games in the Red Sox system.

Ross, 36, was originally placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list after the first game of the Red Sox' doubleheader on June 18, and was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 25. He was also on the seven-day concussion DL from May 12-24. In a six-game rehab stint with Portland (two games) and Pawtucket (four games), he went 1-for-16 with a double, RBI, and two walks. The right-handed hitter is batting .185 (12-for-65) with two doubles, four home runs, and six RBI in 23 games for the Red Sox this season.

For the 26-year-old Villarreal, a native of La Guaira, Venezuela, this is his first stint with Boston since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers as part of a three-team, seven-player deal on July 30. Since joining the Red Sox organization, he has thrown 2.1 scoreless innings over two outings with the PawSox and also tossed two scoreless outings totaling 2.2 innings for Short-A Lowell on rehab. In 32 minor league games this season, including 28 outings for Detroit's Triple-A Toledo, Villarreal is 2-2 with two saves, a 2.75 ERA (12 ER/39.1 IP) and 46 strikeouts compared to 27 walks with no home runs allowed. He also appeared in seven games for the Tigers this season, going 0-2 while allowing 10 runs in 4.1 innings. In 73 career big league appearances, all in relief with the Tigers from 2011-13, he has fanned 86 batters in 75.0 innings and is 4-8 with a 4.56 ERA. 

The 24-year-old De La Rosa has pitched in five games for the Red Sox this season over two stints with the club. He has a 4.76 ERA (3 ER/5.2 IP) and three strikeouts while pitching out of the bullpen. The Dominican native returns to Pawtucket, where he has gone 3-3 with a 4.23 ERA (36 ER/76.2 IP) and 74 strikeouts in 20 starts while being named an International League All-Star. 

In 23 games over two stints with the Red Sox this season, Holt has batted .203 (12-for-59) with two doubles, 11 RBI, eight runs scored, and a stolen base. Defensively, the 25-year-old played in 20 games at third base (17 starts), and also appeared in three games at second base. In 69 games for Pawtucket this year, he has hit .264 (63-for-239) with four doubles, one home run, and 20 RBI.

Lavarnway, 26, has appeared in 19 games over three major league stints with the Red Sox this season. For Boston he has hit .283 (17-for-60) with six doubles, eight RBI, and two walks. In 38 games for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .261 (36-for-138) with nine doubles, three home runs, and 21 RBI.

Bailey, 29, was placed on the 15-day DL on July 19 (retroactive to July 13) with a right shoulder strain, and underwent shoulder surgery on July 24. In 30 appearances for Boston this season, he went 3-1 with eight saves and a 3.77 ERA (12 ER/28.2 IP) with 39 strikeouts.

Buchholz, 29, is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA (16 ER/84.1 IP) in 12 starts for Boston this season. He last pitched for the Red Sox on June 8 and was placed on the 15-day on June 18 (retroactive to June 9) with a neck strain.
