Latest projection for Boston's Opening Day roster
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Since our last roster projection on Feb. 10, a lot has changed with the Red Sox, most notably the signing of free agent Alex Bregman.
There have also been some health updates that have led to announcements that certain players (Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford) will open the season on the injured list and the possibility that others (Masataka Yoshida, Wilyer Abreu) will join them.
All we can do is project what the 26-man roster will look like in Texas for Opening Day on March 27.
Catcher (2): Connor Wong, Carlos Narvaez
The starting position is solidified for Wong, and it could be his for a while following the December trade that sent highly-touted prospect Kyle Teel to the White Sox. Narvaez, who played his first six Major League games for the Yankees last year, has the inside track on the backup spot because of his highly-regarded defense.
First base (1): Triston Casas
Casas looks forward to a healthy season after missing four months last season due to torn cartilage in his left rib cage.
Second base (2): David Hamilton, Vaughn Grissom
Hamilton, perhaps the fastest player on the team, came to camp as a bit of an afterthought after missing the final month of last season with a fractured left index finger. But he got stronger in the offseason and could be part of a platoon with Grissom, who is trying to re-establish his footing after a tough first season in Boston. Then there is Kristian Campbell, MLB Pipeline’s No. 7 overall prospect (No. 2 for Boston), who is also being given a chance to win the job.
Shortstop (1): Trevor Story
Story is healthy again and looks locked in at the plate. Having Story for a full season would mean big things for Boston defensively, offensively and in the clubhouse.
Third base (1): Alex Bregman
The Red Sox targeted Bregman for the entire offseason, and finally landed the veteran leader at the start of Spring Training with a three-year deal that includes opt-outs after ‘25 and ‘26. While there was some talk that Bregman would move to second so that star slugger Rafael Devers could stay at third, things don’t seem to be trending in that direction. Bregman has only played third in Spring Training and Devers won’t make his Grapefruit League debut until March 15.
Outfielders (4): Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Roman Anthony, Rob Refsnyder
Wilyer Abreu is the team’s starting right fielder, but a viral illness has set him back several weeks, creating the chance he could open the season on the injured list. If that’s the case, Roman Anthony, the No. 2 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, could fill in until Abreu gets back.
The Red Sox want to keep Rafaela in center this season after he spent his rookie year roaming between the infield and outfield. Refsnyder, per usual, will play against all lefty starters. Masataka Yoshida will enter this mix at some point, but he likely won’t be far enough along in his throwing program to open the season on the active roster.
DH (1): Rafael Devers
At one point, the ’24 season looked like it was going to be the best of Devers’ career. But both of his shoulders barked at him, hampering his bat for the final two months. Devers should get back on track after rehabbing during the winter and spending most of Spring Training fine-tuning his swing. If Devers does become the DH -- something he was vocal about not wanting to do when camp started – it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the role.
Bench/Utility (1): Romy Gonzalez
Gonzalez had an underrated season off the bench in 2024 and gives the club another threat against lefties. He also plays all four infield positions.
Starting Pitchers (5): Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, Richard Fitts, Lucas Giolito
Two mainstays from last season – Brayan Bello (right shoulder inflammation) and Kutter Crawford (nagging right knee injury) – will open the season on the injured list. Crochet gives the club the ace it lacked a year ago. Buehler and Giolito (who missed all of last season following surgery) add some experience. Fitts is the favorite to fill in until Bello returns in early to mid-Aprill.
Relief Pitchers (8): Liam Hendriks, Justin Slaten, Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Wilson, Luis Guerrero, Adam Ottavino, Zack Kelly
Hendriks goes in as the slight favorite to be the closer, but is in competition with last year’s Rule 5 breakout pitcher Slaten and the hard-throwing Chapman. Whitlock should be a weapon in the multi-innings role. There are several others who will try to win the final couple of spots, led by a veteran non-roster invite in Ottavino and a promising fireballer in Guerrero.
