Red Sox, Devers agree to $11.2M deal (source)
Club avoids arbitration with all five eligible players
PORT CHARLOTE, Fla. -- The Red Sox took care of an important piece of business on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration with star slugger Rafael Devers on a one-year deal, the club announced.
A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that Devers will earn a base salary of $11.2 million in 2022. The club did not disclose the terms. Devers has one year of arbitration-eligibility left.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom has expressed hope several times in the past of securing a long-term contract with Devers before he reaches free agency.
The Sox also agreed to one-year deals with their four other arbitration-eligible players on Tuesday.
Outfielder Alex Verdugo ($3.55 million), righty starter Nick Pivetta ($2.65 million), infielder Christian Arroyo ($1.2 million) and lefty reliever Josh Taylor ($1.025 million) were the other agreements.
Devers will be at the heart of a potent Boston batting order that will also include shortstop Xander Bogaerts, designated hitter J.D. Martinez and reported free-agent acquisition Trevor Story.
The 25-year-old Devers has raked since his initial callup to the Major Leagues in 2017.
In 2021, Devers was an All-Star for the first time in his career, belting 38 homers and 37 doubles to go with 113 RBIs and an .890 OPS. Though Devers played with a right forearm ailment throughout the postseason, he still slashed .295/.392/.636 to go with five homers and 12 RBIs.
Verdugo, Boston’s starting left fielder, hit .289 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs last season. With Chris Sale set to start the season on the injured list, Pivetta will open as Boston’s No. 2 starter. He went 9-8 with a 4.53 ERA in 2021, and came through with three strong performances in the postseason.
Taylor, who is dealing with back issues that could delay his start to the season, held lefties to a .381 OPS last season. Arroyo came up with some clutch hits for the Red Sox last year and played solid defense at second base. He will play second, short and third this season, and might also get some time in the outfield.
