Texas Rangers announce Minor League coordinators and coaching staffs for top four affiliates

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the organization’s 2025 minor league coordinators and coaching staffs for its top four minor league affiliates.

The coordinator staff will consist of Kenny Holmberg (Field/Infield), Jon Goebel (Upper Level Pitching/AAA Pitching Coach), Cody Atkinson (Director, Hitting), Eric Dorton (Hitting), and Garrett Kennedy (Asst. Field/Catching). The club will return each of its four full-season minor league affiliate managers from 2024: Doug Davis (Triple-A Round Rock), Carlos Cardoza (Double-A Frisco), C**had Comer** (High-A Hub City), and Carlos Maldonado (Low-A Hickory).

Comer will be the inaugural skipper for the Hub City Spartanburgers, the Rangers’ new High-A affiliate (South Atlantic League) located in Spartanburg, S.C. Maldonado will lead the Hickory Crawdads, which shift from the High-A South Atlantic League to the Low-A Carolina League for the 2025 season.

Texas farm clubs combined for a 383-333 (.535) record in 2025, the 5th-highest organizational win percentage in MLB and 4th-highest in the American League. It marked the sixth straight full season (excl. 2020) in which the Rangers posted a winning organizational record, with the club and its affiliates going 2,435-2,180 (.528) over that span.

Coordinators

Kenny Holmberg returns for a fourth season as the club’s Field Coordinator while also maintaining Infield Coordinator duties for a 10th straight year. Jon Goebel will operate in a dual role as Upper Level Pitching Coordinator and Triple-A Round Rock Pitching Coach after spending the previous two seasons as Double-A Frisco’s Pitching Coach (2023-24). Cody Atkinson returns as Director of Hitting and has overseen the minor league hitting program since joining the organization in October 2019. Eric Dorton reprises his role as Hitting Coordinator for a third straight year, his seventh overall as an instructor in the Texas system. Garrett Kennedy enters his second straight season as Asst. Field Coordinator and Catching Coordinator in 2025, his fourth year with the organization.

Triple-A Round Rock Express

Doug Davis returns for his third season as manager at Triple-A Round Rock, following a 2024 campaign in which he skippered the Express to a 71-77 (.480) finish. The former Major League catcher owns a lifetime 826-737 (.528) managerial record in 12 seasons as a minor league skipper with the New York-NL (1996-2000), Toronto (2006-08), New York-AL (2021-22), and Texas (2023-24) organizations. Jon Goebel enters his first season as Round Rock’s Pitching Coach after previously serving in the same role with Double-A Frisco (2023-24) and High-A Hickory (2022). Dave Borkowski (Boar-COW-ski) returns for his third season with the Express and first as the club’s Bullpen Coach. Matt Lawson (Hitting Coach) will oversee Round Rock’s offensive efforts for a fourth straight year, a position he has held since joining the organization in 2022. Chase Lambin returns as the Bench Coach for the Express in 2025, his 11th season with Texas. Josh Johnson (Development Coach) will be in his seventh season in the Texas organization and third as a Development Coach on the Triple-A staff. Will Whitehead (Athletic Trainer) returns for a third straight year on the Express medical staff, marking his 16th season in professional baseball. Jeff Mathers (Strength and Conditioning) embarks on his second campaign with Round Rock after stints with the Seattle (2019-23) and Detroit (2013-18) organizations.

Double-A Frisco RoughRiders

Carlos Cardoza, who was selected as the organization’s 2024 Bobby Jones Player Development Man of the Year, enters his third season as manager in Frisco after leading the RoughRiders to an 84-54 (.609) record and a playoff berth in 2024. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native helmed Frisco to a First Half Texas League South Division championship with a 44-25 (.638) mark, with the RoughRiders eventually falling to Midland in the 2024 Texas League Division Series. In eight seasons as a manager in the Texas farm system, Cardoza has compiled a lifetime 460-334 (.579) managerial record with the Dominican Summer League Rangers (2016-18), Arizona Complex League Rangers (2019), Down East (2021), Hickory (2022), and Frisco (2023-24). Jose Jaimes (Pitching Coach) joins the RoughRiders’ staff after working in the same role with the ACL Rangers in 2024. 2025 marks Jaimes’ 17th full season as a coach in the Texas organization and first year at the Double-A level. Carson Phillips (Bullpen Coach) enters his first season with Texas’ player development staff, previously serving as a bullpen coach in the Toronto organization (2023-24) and as a graduate assistant with University of Arizona’s baseball program (2022). Ryan Tuntland (Hitting Coach) enters his third season with Frisco after overseeing a RoughRiders offense in 2024 that ranked among Texas League leaders in runs (3rd, 673), doubles (3rd, 232), and OPS (4th, .719). Tyler Wolfe (Hitting Coach) will be in his third season with the Rangers organization after serving as Development Coach in Frisco last season and as the ACL Rangers’ hitting coach in 2023. Returning to the Texas organization for a fifth season is Kawika Emsley-Pai, who will take on a new role as Frisco’s Bench Coach in 2025. Michael Theile (Athletic Trainer) ascends to the Double-A ranks following stints with the Rangers’ Low-A (2024) and ACL (2022-23) affiliates, and Brett Platts (Strength and Conditioning) returns for his second season with the RoughRiders to round out Cardoza’s staff in Frisco this year.

High-A Hub City Spartanburgers

Chad Comer retains his position as Texas’ High-A manager for a third straight year and will skipper the Hub City Spartanburgers in their debut season. After guiding Hickory to a 70-55 (.560) record and postseason berth in his managerial debut in 2023, Comer steered the Crawdads to a 62-70 (.470) mark in 2024. The Mansfield, Tex. native has completed nine seasons as a coach in the Rangers farm system (2015-19, 2021-24) and briefly served as the hitting coach at his alma mater, the University of Texas at Arlington, in 2020. Julio Valdez (Pitching Coach) returns after guiding a Hickory staff that led the South Atlantic League in strikeouts last season (1,365). Hitting Coach Drew Sannes reprises his role for a third straight year, and Jay Sullenger will maintain his position as Development Coach for Hub City. Elevys Gonzalez will join Sullenger as a Development Coach, ascending from the same role with the ACL Rangers in 2024. After spending last season as the ACL Rangers’ Athletic Trainer, Kiley Brown is slated to join the Spartanburgers dugout as an Athletic Trainer in 2025. Strength and Conditioning Coach Bryce Gist returns for his second season with the Rangers High-A affiliate.

Low-A Hickory Crawdads

Carlos Maldonado enters his third season as the Rangers’ Low-A skipper, posting a 65-63 (.508) record with Down East in 2024. The 46-year-old Maracaibo, Venezuela native sports a career 254-182 (.583) record across managerial stints with the Dominican Summer League Rangers (2019, 2021), Arizona Complex League Rangers (2022), and Down East (2023-24), fashioning a winning record in four consecutive campaigns (beg. 2021). Thomas St. Clair (Pitching Coach) begins his second year at the Low-A level following a 2024 season in which his Down East pitching staff paced the Carolina League in ERA (3.02) and WHIP (1.22). Brian Pozos (Hitting Coach) returns for his third season with Texas’ Low-A affiliate and fourth overall in the Rangers chain (ACL Rangers in 2022). Wes Hunt (Development Coach) and Jorge Cortes (Development Coach) both enter their second seasons with the Texas organization. After spending 2024 as a Rehab Athletic Trainer, Garrett Enders (Athletic Trainer) joins the Crawdads for his fifth year with the Texas organization. Mauro Castillo (Strength and Conditioning) ascends to Hickory after a two-year run in the same role with the ACL Rangers.
