Rangers Re-Sign RHP Nathan Eovaldi to Three-Year Contract
Right-hander has posted a 3.72 ERA over 54 starts for Texas since 2023
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers tonight announced that the club has re-signed right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to a three-year contract covering the 2025-27 seasons. To make room for Eovaldi on the club’s Major League roster, right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras has been designated for assignment.
Eovaldi, who turns 35 on February 13, went 12-8 with a 3.80 ERA (72 ER/170.2 IP) over 29 starts for the Rangers in 2024, leading the club in wins, innings, strikeouts (166), and quality starts (16). He ranked among A.L. leaders in opponent’s on-base percentage (9th, .282), WHIP (10th, 1.11), opponent’s batting average (10th, .229), and strikeout to walk ratio (10th, 3.95). The right-hander served as Texas’ Opening Day starter last season, joining fellow Alvin, Texas native Nolan Ryan as the only native Texans to earn Opening Day starting nods for the Rangers in club history (beg. 1972).
Over two seasons with Texas (2023-24), Eovaldi has gone 24-13 with a 3.72 ERA (130 ER/314.2 IP) and 298 strikeouts over 54 starts, ranking among club leaders in that span in wins (1st), innings (1st), quality starts (1st, 27), starts (2nd, 54), and strikeouts (2nd, 298). Additionally, he ranks among qualified A.L. pitchers over that stretch in ground-ball double plays induced (T4th, 29), winning percentage (7th, .649), WHIP (16th, 1.12), and baserunners allowed per 9.0 IP (18th, 10.47).
The two-time A.L. All-Star selection (2021 w/ BOS, 2023 w/ TEX) boasts a career 3.05 ERA (27 ER/79.2 IP) in 17 postseason games/12 starts and ranks among active pitchers in postseason wins (4th, 9), innings (8th), and strikeouts (9th, 82). Texas won all 6 of Eovaldi’s starts during the club's 2023 World Series title run, as he went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA (12 ER/36.2 IP) and became the first hurler in MLB history to win 5 starts in a single postseason. He tossed 6.0 shutout innings and earned the win in World Series Game 5 vs. Arizona to clinch the Rangers' first championship in franchise history.
A 13-year MLB veteran and two-time World Series champion, Eovaldi has amassed a career 91-81 record with a 4.07 ERA (711 ER/1572.1 IP) and 1358 strikeouts in 294 games/275 starts for Los Angeles-NL (2011-12), Miami (2012-14), New York-AL (2015-16), Tampa Bay (2018), Boston (2018-22), and Texas (2023-24). He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB Draft from Alvin H.S.
Contreras, 25, was acquired by the Rangers via waiver claim from Los Angeles-AL on October 31. He posted a 2-4 record with 2 saves and a 4.35 ERA (33 ER/68.1 IP) over 49 games/3 starts for the Angels and Pirates in 2024.
With tonight’s moves, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster.
