Rangers agree to terms with OF Robbie Grossman on one-year contract
Surprise, Ariz. — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has agreed to terms with outfielder Robbie Grossman on a one-year Major League contract covering the 2023 season.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Grossman, left-handed pitcher Brett Martin has been added to the 60-day Injured List. Martin had left shoulder surgery on January 18 and is expected to miss a majority of the 2023 season.
Grossman, 33, combined to bat .209 (86-for-411) with 7 home runs and 45 RBI over 129 games with Detroit and Atlanta last season, including a .320/.436/.443/.879 (39-for-122) slash line against left-handed pitching. He worked walks in 56 of his 477 (11.7%) plate appearances in 2022, the 21st-highest walk rate in the Major Leagues (min. 450 PA). Grossman spent time on the Injured List last season from May 30-June 10 with a neck strain.
The switch-hitter set career highs in games played (156), runs scored (88), hits (133), home runs (23), RBI (67), walks (98) and stolen bases (20) with the Tigers in 2021, becoming the first Detroit batter to hit 20-or-more home runs and steal 20-or-more bases in a single season since Curtis Granderson in 2009 (30 HR/20 SB).
Since 2016, Grossman ranks among MLB leaders (min. 3,000 PA) in walk pct. (9th, 13.3%), pitches per PA (18th, 4.06), walks (20th, 416), and on-base pct. (31st, .351). He has slashed .286/.394/.436/.829 (211-for-739) against left-handed pitching in that span, the 12th-highest OBP versus lefties in MLB (min. 500 PA vs. LHP) over the last seven seasons.
Grossman has appeared exclusively as an outfielder in the big leagues, making starts in left (505), right (235), and center field (30). His .997 fielding percentage (3 E/830 TC) spanning the last four seasons (beg. 2019) ranks second among MLB outfielders (min. 400 starts) to only Baltimore’s Austin Hays.
The San Diego, California native has batted .245 (815-for-3330) with 80 home runs and 366 RBI in 1011 career games over 10 seasons in the Majors spent with Houston (2013-15), Minnesota (2016-18), Oakland (2019-20), Detroit (2021-22), and Atlanta (2022). He was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sixth round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Tex., located just outside of Houston.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers have one player on the 60-day Injured List (Brett Martin) and 70 players on the club’s Spring Training roster: a full 40-man roster along with 30 non-roster invitees.
