Marcus Semien announced as finalist at second base in 2024 MLB All-Star balloting

June 27th, 2024

Arlington, Texas—Major League Baseball announced this evening that Marcus Semien of the Texas Rangers has been selected as one of two finalists to start for the American League at second base in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard on Tuesday, July 16 at Globe Life Field.

Semien received 1,484,537 votes in Phase I on the 2024 MLB All-Star Ballot presented by BuildSubmarines.com, second among American League second basemen behind Houston’s Jose Altuve with 1,976,539 votes. Phase I of the balloting ended earlier today.

Semien and Altuve advance to Phase 2 of the 2024 All-Star Balloting with voting beginning on Sunday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. CT and concluding on Wednesday, July 3 at 11:00 a.m. Fans can cast their votes exclusively once per day online and via mobile devices at rangers.com/vote, the MLB App, and the MLB Ballpark App.

The top two vote-getters at each position (and top six outfielders) advance to Phase 2 of the voting in each league. The leading vote-getter in each league during the first phase of voting, outfielder Aaron Judge in the AL and first baseman Bryce Harper in the NL, received automatic starting assignments at the All-Star Game and bypass the second phase of voting. As a result, the other two American League outfielders (out of four finalists) will be elected in Phase 2, and there will be no Phase 2 first base competition in the National League.

This is the second consecutive season that Semien has been an All-Star finalist at second base as he defeated Toronto’s Whit Merrifield in 2023 to earn his second career start in the Midsummer Classic. Semien also started at second base in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game as a member of the Blue Jays.
