Rangers FAQ following Deadline, IL moves
Andrus activated as Odor heads to injured list with eye infection
At Monday's Trade Deadline, the Rangers traded Mike Minor to the A's, while sending Robinson Chirinos and Todd Frazier to the Mets. On Tuesday, as Elvis Andrus was activated from the injured list, Rougned Odor landed on it with an eye infection.
Here are questions needing answers following these moves:
Is Nick Solak the Rangers' second baseman until Odor comes back or until he gives up the job?
Solak is still going to play some left field. Eli White, a right-handed hitter, is playing left field on Tuesday with Solak at second against Astros left-hander Framber Valdez. But infielder Anderson Tejeda, a switch-hitter, has also been called up. He could play second against righties, with Solak shifting to left field.
“It might be that kind of mix,” manager Chris Woodward said.
What are the expectations for White?
White had a great Spring Training and could have been with the Rangers before Leody Taveras if not for a strained oblique in Summer Camp. He has transitioned from shortstop into an excellent defensive outfielder. The Rangers are leaving Taveras in center with White in left field. Now, White must show he can hit big league pitching.
“When he came into [Spring Training] this year, he was a different guy,” Woodward said. “It was honestly a different swing -- the ball was coming off his bat better, it was a cleaner path. There's a lot of positive things. I was like, ‘Wow, this guy's turned himself into a guy.’ So now it's just a matter of getting him the reps and seeing what it looks like.”
Is this Ronald Guzmán’s last chance to prove he can be an everyday first baseman at the big league level?
Guzmán will be out of options going into next season. At the moment, he is the Rangers' first baseman now that Frazier is gone.
“I don’t know if it his last chance,” Woodward said. “I can’t say that. It is a chance for him. We’re all intrigued by him. He has put in a lot of work to figure out that swing. There are a lot of timing issues that he has cleaned up with good results. After this, if it doesn’t work out, I don’t know how many more [chances] he is going to get. It’s up to him.”
Does Andrus feel his shortstop job is now at stake?
"I always play like I'm a rookie,” Andrus said. “This is my 12th season, but if I ever told you that I played super comfortable, that would be a lie. Somebody can come, like I did in 2009, and take my spot. You have to perform. To maintain your position, you have to perform.
"I don't really want to put more pressure on myself. I know I'm a great player and I know what I can do when I focus 100 percent in the field.”
What does he need to show in the final 27 games?
“The toughest thing for me is not to believe my instincts during the game, and to actually believe more in a piece of paper, or report,” Andrus said. “That's where the game is right now. I think that's what I've been a little hardheaded about.”
The Rangers now have some of their top prospects at the alternate training site, including catcher Sam Huff, infielders Josh Jung, Davis Wendzel, Justin Foscue and Sherten Apostel and outfielders Bubba Thompson and Steele Walker. Are they candidates to be called up?
Woodward said any player in alternate camp is a candidate to be called up. But there is an issue. Jung and Wendzel were drafted in 2019. They don’t have to go on the 40-man roster until 2022. If they are called up before then, the Rangers would have to start using options to send them to the Minors. Same thing with Foscue, who does haven’t to go on the 40-man roster until after 2023.
“I don’t know if we want to start some of their clocks,” Woodward said. “But at the same time, getting them here and potentially getting them that experience is valuable.”
