ARLINGTON -- The Rangers will now be going to the General Managers Meetings with a GM.

The club announced on Monday morning that assistant general manager Ross Fenstermaker was promoted to general manager ahead of Major League Baseball’s annual GM Meetings in San Antonio. He becomes the 10th individual to serve in the role for the Rangers.

Texas announced on Sept. 13 that Chris Young was signed to a multiyear extension and received a promotion from general manager to president of baseball operations, a position that had been vacant since Jon Daniels was relieved of his duties in August 2022. The GM position remained open until now.

Additionally, the club hired Cole Figueroa as assistant general manager, and he will oversee areas of baseball operations.

“Ross’ fingerprints are all over the organization,” Young said. “Ross is someone who complements my skill set extremely well. We have a great working relationship. He pushes me in ways that make me better. He's so bright. He embodies our values and understands our culture, and certainly has worked with a number of employees here way longer than even I have. I couldn't be happier to welcome Ross into this role and align with him and our shared vision of pushing forward to compete and win more championships as we look to the future of our organization.”

Since Daniels’ dismissal, Young and Fenstermaker have effectively worked as a one-two punch atop the organization. Fenstermaker’s promotion will likely not affect how the Rangers operate on a daily basis. It’s a partnership that both hope to continue building over the years.

Figueroa’s addition will also enhance communication and roles across all departments of baseball operations.

“My leadership style is that we have a great executive group that weighs in collectively on almost all of our decision-making,” Young explained. “While I'm responsible as being the ultimate decision maker, this is a collective effort. I'm only as good as the leadership team that we have, and Ross has been a huge part of that.”

Fenstermaker spent the past three years as assistant general manager of player development and international operations.

Fenstermaker will be entering his 16th season with the Rangers. He began with the club in 2010 as a baseball operations intern before becoming a professional scout from '11-16. He spent '17 as the club’s international crosschecker, then became the director of pro scouting from '18-19 and senior director of pro and international scouting from '20-21.

“I think I've had the opportunity to see a lot of different ways in which you can do this job,” Fenstermaker said of his time with the organization. “I’ve been around a lot of different great people with different perspectives. Also, I'm just a very curious person by nature, so [I want] to be able to get outside of the organization and connect with others around the game and try to absorb and learn as much as possible in ways that we might be able to apply that to the Rangers in our future success.

“Having been here for so long and being a part of multiple different regimes, so to speak, and different styles, I think there's a lot to learn from each one of them. You take the good things and you learn from the bad things, and you hope that you continue to learn, grow and evolve over time.”
