Rangers acquire Minor League 2B for Fairbanks
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are looking for pitching help but gave one up when they traded reliever Peter Fairbanks to the Rays for Minor League second baseman Nick Solak, the team announced on Saturday.
Solak, 24, was hitting .266 with 17 home runs, 47 RBIs, a .353 on-base percentage and a .485 slugging percentage in 85 games at Triple-A Durham. He has also played center and left field and gives the Rangers an offensive bat for the higher level of their farm system.
Solak was a second-round pick by the Yankees in the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Louisville and traded to the Rays before the 2018 season. He will be assigned to Triple-A Nashville.
“Nick Solak was a guy we really liked in the Draft,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “Mike Medici, our area scout, really loves him. After the Yankees traded him, we had been talking to the Rays about him. This is a chance to get a guy who could be an everyday player in the big leagues. A right-handed bat and good makeup.”
Fairbanks is a right-hander who overcame two Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgeries to become a power reliever. He pitched at three levels in the Rangers system this season with a 4.15 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings.
He had a 9.35 ERA in eight appearances with the Rangers from June 8 to July 2, but also struck out 15 batters in 8 2/3 innings.
“They were really interested in Peter and for good reason,” Daniels said. “Peter’s got lightning bolts coming out of his arm. He has been electric arm. I give a ton of credit to our rehab guys in Arizona. The timing of the deal is unusual, but we like it from a baseball trade.”
