Gallo cleared to work out after negative test
ARLINGTON -- Outfielder Joey Gallo has been cleared to begin working out with the Rangers after testing negative for COVID-19, and he was on the field at Globe Life Field for Summer Camp workouts on Friday morning.
Gallo may not play in the intrasquad game on Saturday, when he is also expected to address the media about his situation, but he could take batting practice against some Rangers pitchers. Gallo spent the past two months working out with others at Globe Life Field, before missing the first week of Summer Camp while recovering from a positive test for COVID-19.
Gallo told the Rangers he has been feeling good while he has been gone. But manager Chris Woodward said he doesn’t want to push Gallo too quickly at the beginning.
“Yeah, we've got to be careful with Joey,” Woodward said. “It was really good to see him taking batting practice. We've just got to be careful, obviously, in game situations. He's probably just going to take some live at-bats [Saturday]. We're going to be off on Sunday as well, so I think it just gives Joey a little bit of some live at-bats maybe [Saturday], take it easy, and then the off-day, and then Monday we'll probably get a little bit more game reps.”
Gallo first tested positive for COVID-19 on June 27, but he has been asymptomatic from the beginning. He was required to have two negative tests over a 24-hour period before rejoining the Rangers.
“I think he’ll be ready for the season,” Woodward said. “I’m not worried about that. Obviously, as long as he doesn’t get hurt, he should be ready. Timing-wise, he just might be a little bit off in the beginning. It just depends. Some guys need just one week of at-bats.
“I’m just trying to get it in his head to not stress out about it, because that’s what creates the issue of, ‘My timing’s off, I’m going to stress out.’ Joey wants to feel great. He wants to be back in there. He’s hungry to get back in there. He’s kind of a wild horse when it comes to that.”
Gallo’s return leaves reliever Brett Martin as the only Rangers player who has tested positive for COVID-19 and is not currently working out with the club.
Rangers offer DoppelRangers
The Rangers are not expecting fans at Globe Life Field at the beginning of the season, so they are offering the 2D version instead.
With a DoppelRanger, fans can have their likenesses located in the lower seating bowl areas behind home plate and the dugouts for at least July games at Globe Life Field. If fans are allowed to attend games later in the season, the DoppelRangers would be moved to other areas of the ballpark.
The 2D cardboard images will be created from photographs submitted by fans and may be ordered online through Wednesday. Individual DoppelRangers can be purchased for $50, with all proceeds benefiting the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.
DoppelRangers information and order forms are available at rangers.com/doppelrangers.
“I don't think it's creepy it all. We've got to get creative,” Woodward said. “If that's what it takes for a little sense of normalcy, I'm down for it. I've watched the games in Korea where they've got [stuffed animals] in the stands. It's pretty cool.”
Rangers beat
• Kyle Gibson, the Rangers' No. 4 starter, went five innings and 79 pitches in Friday’s intrasquad game, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out five.
• The only runs scored against Gibson came on back-to-back home runs by Danny Santana and Rougned Odor in the fourth inning. Rookie infielder Anderson Tejeda hit a home run off Edinson Vólquez.
• The Rangers are moving their workouts to the evenings on Monday, with an intrasquad game scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT at Globe Life Field. Woodward is also hoping to play with the roof open, so that his players can get a feel for the new ballpark in that setting. The roof has been closed for all workouts to this point.
