Irving Nimitz High School
Texas Rangers All-Star pitcher and three-year varsity letter winner for Irving Nimitz High School, Gio Frias, recorded her 500th career strikeout on March 28. In that same record-setting game against Richardson High School, Frias had three hits, four RBI and a home run to cap off the performance.
Frias has recorded at least one strikeout in each of her 75 games pitched for the Nimitz Vikings, propelling her to several district accolades, including the 2022 Pitcher of the Year award and back-to-back All-District honors in 2022 and 2023.
Arlington Martin High School
Standout senior for Arlington Martin High School baseball, Romel Garcia, was recognized as Texas High School Baseball’s “D-BAT 6A Hitter of the Week” on April 2. Garcia has established himself as a reliable hitter all season long and currently holds the eighth-best batting average in the district at .391.
He finished the week 7-for-9 at the plate with a triple, two doubles, six RBI and two walks to earn him the honors. The Arlington Martin Warriors, currently sitting at a 12-9-1 record, are on a four-game winning streak and will look to continue the momentum when they face Sam Houston High School in their next game on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m.
South Grand Prairie High School
Right-handed pitcher Jacob Ayala is a perfect 5-0 on the mound this season, leading the charge for South Grand Prairie High School. Ayala hasn’t allowed a run in 34 innings pitched this season, threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts in the team’s 10-0 win over Grand Prairie on March 26 and most recently on April 4, threw a complete game three-hit shutout in the team’s 2-0 victory over the top-ranked Arlington High School.
Ayala is also a deserving finalist in the Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Crown Golf Sports Awards, which, through public voting, help determine the area high school Players of the Year. Voting for the High School Sports Awards will remain open through 6 p.m. on Friday, April 5.
